P30 chassis

Have a '96 Georgie Boy Cruise Master on a Chevy 454 P30 chassis. DH thinks we are having a problem with the fuel pump. I did a search but most of the topics are not specific enough for him! Anyway if you have this particular chassis and have replaced or worked on the fuel pump, he would like to know about where you cut the hole in floor to access the fuel pump. (I don't like the thought of him cutting and cutting just to find the pump.) He doesn't want to drop the tank as it's as you know OLD and probably rusted bolts etc. just don't want another problem to pop up. We have a schematic of the frame with location of tanks etc. from the original GBM flier when we purchased unit in '96. He thinks it is just very generic. The unit is cranking too long to start, runs great once on the road, have had the relays checked they are good. Thanks for any help you can give us.

Update--- had unit in for a tune up today. Hurray it fixed the problem. Fuel pump off the list for one. Inside of distributor cap really corroded as we're the spark plugs. Starts great , sounds good runs great thank you all for all the input. We are once again happy campers!

Assuming a current tune up is in-place then it could well be a fuel pressure issue. Your engine probably is using a TBI system instead of the vortec mentioned. However, the problem may be the same. Check fuel pressure when running and then again after it has been shut off for a few hours... I suspect you may find the pressure has dropped considerably.
Good luck,
Gary

I bet a cold one that his gas coach doesn't have a pass through compartment.

FWIW. My 95 Bounder has 3 pass throughs. Not as uncommon as one might think.

Come on down I will keep one or more cold for you.

If this is a vortex 454 engine and hard starting after it sets for an hour or over night then it could be the fuel regulator. The fuel regulator is under the intake manifold cover and if faulty it will slowly leak fuel into the intake. It takes sometime to leak enough fuel to flood the engine on start up, this is way it starts fine after its been running. Usually there will be no other symptoms only hard starting after sitting for a period of time (depending on how large the leak is). I hope this helps you out.

Had an '85 Allegro P-30, 454 Gimmy engine. Had very severe vapor lock problem from day 1 Until we put a secondary fuel pump right in front of the fuel tank. Also had many, many spark plug wires burning up due to the engine heat and went thru 3 manifolds! Never again GM!

When my fuel pump stopped working in the tank. It would start fine and run fine on the flat. Once it started to go up a hill or you needed to pass it would stumble and backfire. I don't think it's a fuel pump problem if all it is, is a hard start problem. Check the fuel pressure at the TBI. That will dictate if you need to do some fuel issue.

When I had a P30 most of my engine problems were from the plug wires. They over heat from the exhaust manifold and then fail. A constant problem. Mileage dropped to 5MPG.

You lose we have 2 pass throughs. First thing we did was to change the fuel filter. Thanks for all your input.we appreciate it.

It might be the fuel pump but if it runs good on the road under load then I would look elsewhere first. Check the hoses for leaks/cracks that could let air in and fuel to drain back. Filters, but they would cause problems under load if bad. It is hard to do long distance problem solving.

If it runs good when on the road, I would think the pump is good. I would be looking at the tune up part, filters , air and gas, plugs and wires, distributor cap and rotor.

Is it hard to start hot and cold. If injected do a leak down on them.
