Selling a Class A Motorhome

Please don't bombard me with You Can't Sell on here, I know that, and I'm not trying to sell it on here. I lost my husband in March and need some advice. Is there any other places other than RV Trader and RV Net to sell motorhomes. Can anyone give some advice without being nasty? Thank you.

I assume your Zephyr is the one that listed a few days ago for $63,500. It sure appears to be a nice coach, but it is 17 years old and only has two slides. Being that old it probably cannot be financed. Therefore, you are going to need someone with that much cash who wants a 17 year old vehicle with only two slides. Frankly, there are a whole lot of coaches out there that meet that basic description, both from people in your situation as well as people who want to upgrade to the current popular 4 slide and full wall configurations. If you don't get a buyer pretty quick, it is probably time to lower the price, at least into the 50s. Tiffin has a great reputation, so that is in your favor, but sitting on a price that proves to be unrealistic just means you are missing buyers who might not be there when you decide to lower the price.

A simple way for your situation may be a consignment dealer. Do a lot of research on the consignment dealer to be sure of their reputation. Be leary fo facebook, craigslist scammers.

I sold my Bounder on consignment. simple, they had the hassles involved in sales/etc. check the BBB etc. for information on sellers.
In MD I could not do consignment, supposedly they had to "own" everything on the lot.

Most people don't know that when you consign a vehicle, you transfer legal ownership to them. It doesn't matter that you still have the title. All is well as long as the business is stable, but I watched about 40 people lose their consigned vehicles when the business went bankrupt. They chained the gates closed and all vehicles became property of the bank and major lienholders. None of them got their vehicles back.

1. Anyone on an offshore oil rig
2. Wants to buy "the unit" for full price sight unseen
3. for their father
4. wants to deal only through PayPal
5. is sending an agent to pick it up

I have to say it was a bit odd but i got a text from a buyer for my motorcycle at 3 am
I played the game anyway
He bought it full price unseen
He sent me money through paypal
He sent someone out with a truck to pick it up
Never spoke to him and he never rode the bike

You were very lucky. Don't count on it happening again. All the signs were there for a rip-off.

I would agree you got lucky. The thing to remember is if the buyer opens up a dispute, paypal sides with the buyer not the seller.

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for your replies. I've tried Holland Motor Homes, I have a 2002 Tiffin Zephyr, he said $30,000, when I asked what the commission was he said anything over 30 we keep, didn't sound kosher to me. One dealer in Grand Rapids, Mi said it was to old for them, not just because it's mine, but there is nothing wrong with the coach, you could get in it today and drive across the country with no problems, when we bought it, there were problems and we took it to a Freightliner garage and had it gone thru and any repairs that needed to be done, that's just the way Rick was, everything had to be right. It's at an auction place now and really getting low ball offers, I know I'm not going to get what it's worth, but I don't like being taken advantage of either just because I lost the love of my life and being female, I'm not that stupid that I don't know what these people are doing. Something for nothing. Again thank you all, I appreciate your help more than you will ever know.

All replyโ€™s are good in addition, get someone in the know to โ€œsurveyโ€ the rig, to provide the condition papers. Negotiate any fee for selling, as some will take advantage of you by demanding 15-20%. A good total scrub for curb appeal. Try your local consignment lots first. Craigslist and the like are good, but you may get all kinds of scam artists. I got em and that was on a Harley. Youโ€™re on the right track with reputable sites you mentioned. Get an RV friend to assist.

I was going to suggest Holland Motorcoach as well, since that's where you are. I didn't know if they do consignments, but another poster I see says they do. I would start there. They could give you some information that might help you get your rig sold. They enjoy a reasonably good reputation and we have looked there before but never bought.

And I also am very sorry for your loss. It's tragic to lose your mate and then have things like this to deal with, but take it one day at a time and you will get through it.

I don't know if all consignments work this way but on my sale, the dealer/consignment location bought the RV from me and sold it to the buyer. when the buyer showed up to pick it up when they filled the water heater it had split over the winter. inadequate drainage. when they advised me of this they also said that "since I was obviously an honorable man"...... I would pay for its replacement. ๐Ÿ™‚
I of course did reimburse them but got a tremendous deal as they obviously didn't want to push things.

As others have said, be very careful with Craigslist. If you decide to consign, this is one of the larger ones:

I am sorry for your loss. I'm sure you are dealing with a lot, and selling an RV can be a time consuming and stressful process. While I've sold a couple of motorhomes on my own with success, it wasn't during a period such as you are navigating through right now. Therefore, I agree with the above posters that consignment may be a good option for you. I did a Google search and found a motorhome dealer in Holland that does consignment sales. It's Holland Motorhomes, and their number is (800) 221-7197. There are likely others. I know nothing of your motorhome and whether it's one that fits the parameters of what that dealer would be interested in (they look to sell mainly late model coaches). If your coach is a bit older, there are certainly dealers that may be interested, you'd just have to call others and ask the questions.

I hope you have luck selling.
