Need help for my neighbot. He can smell gasoline in the back bedroom as they are driving down the road. 2006 Gulf Stream Sun Voyager, 8.1 Vortec. It has a full tank of gas before they left. The coach had been sitting for some months before this trip. The generator would not stay running this morning as he was checking things out before they left. Any suggestions or ideas as to why the smell? Thanks!!

"diamonddogdogs".....The Workhorse chassis has about a 6" hole on the top of the tank. It has a plate that twist locks into that hole. The plate contains all of the fuel line connections, including the GENERATOR line. Most likely, the hoses are going bad. You said the tank was full, so it's sloshing out the top of the tank where the generator hose has probably rotted away.....thus no generator operation.

When Workhorse was selling RV chassis', they inserted a small, about one gallon can, into that opening on the top of the tank. It carried just enough fuel so that the chassis could be driven around before the coach body was added. Once they were ready to add the body, they pulled the can. I know all of this because my 2004 Terra puked fuel every time you filled the tank. They had inserted the plate (twist ring with all the hoses) crooked and it never sealed. They had to drop the tank and reset the plate.

I'm guessing they will have to drop the tank on your friend's coach to replace ALL the fuel hoses. I was able to stick my head up between the frame rails and see the top of the tank leaking. Hard to do, but can be done.

On mine it was the gas tank vents had fallen out.

I smelled gas only when I filled up. Each time getting a bit stronger smell until the day I topped it off and there was a water fall of gas from underneath the MH.

Would find out later that is was the gas tank vents had finally came all the way out of position. 😞

I was on my way down to Florida so what I did was when I filled up I checked the fuel gauge at what point the gas would start to come out below. Never went past that point so no gas came out. Had it fixed in Florida. They said they see it a lot on RV's. From all the bouncing on the road and pot holes.
. Did the tank have to drop to get to the gas vents?

It was my maiden flight new to MH's so I didn't ask and fortunately my friends where able to help me drop it off so I didn't stay to watch.

When I brought it in they crawled underneath it and were able to see that the vents where out so I'm guessing it's accessible.

If I remember correctly they charged me around $140.00 so they couldn't have been under there that long to fix it.

On older Motor homes the gas line from the gas cap opening can leak, look for signs of fuel leaking on all the hoses from the cap to the tank. There are two hoses, one for filling and a smaller one for venting. you should see signs of a leak if it's leaking.

Although I'm talking about the other end, isn't there a recall out for the fuel clips on the 8.1L GM Vortec in the Workhorse chassis? It may be something to look into while you're tracking down other leads.

check the generator and see if it was like mine.
I have an Onan that had the old style fuel filter that screws onto the bottom of the carburetor of the generator. They are prone to leak (happened to me) Replacement is a nipple and an in-line fuel filter.
Just something to check.

Check the bottom of your gas tank. Specifically, where the steel tank support bands cross. A known Workhorse issue is a weld corroding under one of the steel bands.

I would check the fuel line for the generator and the fuel fill for the MH. If thy have rubber hoses leading to the fuel tank the hose may have rotted.

Check gas cap gasket to make sure it seals properly.
