Anybody running super singles on their class A???

For those of you unfamiliar with super singles they are a single WIDE tire/rim that replaces the duals on the rear axle(s) seen on some of the trucks on our highways.
They are very efficient BUT if you have a blowout your unable to limp to a station.

One reason super singles are popular on cement and trash trucks is they provide more floatation over soft ground. Another is that there is no accumulation of debris between the tires that will be expelled when getting back on paved roads.

Super singles are far more popular in the southern states than where the snow flies. While they may get better mileage their profile also doesn't lend itself to slick and/or snow covered roads.

I do business with a local tire company that services several concrete companies in the area. Nearly every time I've been at their shop I've seen cement truck tires coming in from the field. Almost every tire that had a problem while on the road also required the rim to be replaced.

The same also often happens for tires in dual configuration. The big difference is the cost of a super single tire and rim compared to those used in dual configuration.

A super single tire does not mean or is not just a wide tire like cement trucks or or heavy equipment haulers used on the front axles for years where duals wouldn't fit or work to carry heavier weights. Super singles are also lower profile tires to cut down on wind resistance and the weight of the tire and rim.

It's worthwhile to convert a high mileage truck but you'd never break even on fuel savings vs new rims and tires on a low mileage MH. Also possibly having to change your rear end ratio because the tires have a smaller diameter.

They were never designed for RV's and will not improve your MPG as they do on a class 8 truck.

Mchero, you are the one confused. :S
Cement and trash trucks often use super singles on the front that are wider than the one used on a semi. Heck, many of the big DPs are using 365/80/22.5 on the steer and tag axles... I would call that a super single as they will carry more than the 17,000 lbs/axle allowed on a semi with tandem axles.

I have never seen a MH with super singles on it. I imagine that the cost of the rims and tires would take a lot of miles to pay back the gain in fuel economy.

With highway trucks, you can either order them with super singles or re-use the dullys on a different tractor (assuming you have a few tractors). I don't see a market for used MH wheels / tires.

You run them on drive axles, not steer axles as you just stated above!

Also clearly stated in my post above that you Can't limp down the road if you have a blowout. Not looking for any luck.

Good luck when you blow one of them on your coach. I have run them on the front of gravel and mixer trucks ans would never consider it on my coach. I ran them on steer axles and in slippery conditions they were terrible and on the rear I can't see them being much better.

Very fuel efficient. My brother knows a guy that has 2 identical trucks, one has the super singles and has been getting MUCH better mileage than the truck with standard duals.

I hear they are squirrely on wet pavement but I would never run them on a Class 8 or my RV.
