Toddler in a MH

Hello:

We went out this weekend (the weather was spectacular), and came across a problem. Our 18-month-old granddaughter came to visit at camp. It immediately became clear that the stairwell was dangerous to toddlers. As with any danger, it became a toddler magnet. How do you protect kids on the stairs? We are afraid she will take a header off the top.

Thanks, and happy camping!

Ok, Dutch, you're hired, too. I need someone with your handyman skills to come to my house!

Our coach came with a drop in panel that covers the stairs, but putting it in place and removing it was kind of a pain. To make it more convenient to use, I added hinges, a lift strap, and a latch to hold it open, along with attaching a hand rail underneath that matches the other side when the cover is open.

Dennis, I'm going to hire you to install both the cover and the button. Maybe we'll come up with a new gadget and retire in $1.5 motor homes!

I had a similar problem some years ago with aged mother, mother-in-law,and Aunt. A piece of 1/2 inch plywood cut to the proper dimensions worked great. When not on the floor,it was placed along the wall behind the chair.

I know you don't have anything with you right now, but if this is something that might be happening often this Summer, you can invest in a child gate, or even an X-pen for a dog, which you would put around the stairs, to keep the little one away from them.

If you have the steps cutting down in the middle of the room, you may want to get a piece of plywood, that you can lay over the steps, to hide them. Of course, that means more work for you, when you want to go in/out, but I'm sure that you are more concerned about the safety of the Grand-daughter.

We've got a 3 year old, and we worry too! Fortunately, the steps are alongside the kitchen cabinet, so sorta out of site...but we still worry.

Good Luck:)

When our daughter was that age, we had to hold her hands and guide her down the stairs. We had to constantly watch to make sure she did not push the screen door open and take the big fall down 4 stairs. It was a battle because I worry about my girl. Now that she is almost 3, I still have to make sure she hangs onto the handle as she steps down the stairs.
