Toilet Valve opens early

Can't find this exact problem listed anywhere. As you know, the toilet is designed so that when you push the foot lever just a bit, that should open the water valve, then push it to the floor to open the toilet valve to dump the waste into the black tank. Just recently on mine, the valve at the bottom of the toilet opens right when you push on the floor lever. The water valve still works fine, but there is no way to let any water in and keep it in the bowl as the dump valve opens right off the bat too. Anybody run into this problem?

Cleaned it and rubbed the seal down with olive oil as described on another thread. Seems to be working ok for now. Thanks for all the suggestions.

I have this problem when I let the MH sit for a few weeks. The rubber seal gets dry. I take a standard toilet brush and clean the area around the valve, then run water and clean again just using the brush and water. The pedal and seal work like they should everytime (knock on wood). Been using this method for over ten years.

Thetford has 6 or so models with foot pedals....

Go HERE
Pick your toilet, then click on manual. It will have exploded view.

Could be pinched cable, loose clip, bent rod...depends on which model

Should be able to correct in place.
Is it time for your medication or mine?

It is a Thetford toilet. Should be able to push about halfway down to let water in without opening the waste valve at the bottom, then push all the way to open that waste valve. Seems like I would need to remove it and maybe look under it for something that came loose from the foot lever?

Have you tried to LIFT UP on your peddle after you flush, when you do that you can put as much water in the bowl as you want.

What brand do you have. On our Thetford there was a loose hinge clip that slowed the valve to open before letting water in. Kind of hard to repair in place but can be done.
