Tolls on toll roads

First, my rant:

Came into Orange County California yesterday and used the toll road to bypass traffic. (for those not familiar, traffic is horrendous 24/7)

Anyway, we pull up to the toll booth since it's "cash only" unless you have FasTrak and it's $14.00 for the first leg. $14.00 because I'm towing a car, so I'm considered a 5 axle vehicle. Now, if I stop just BEFORE the toll plaza and UNHOOK the car, it's only $9.00 for BOTH. Drive past the toll plaza and hook up again and I'm good to go, saving 36% !!! How does that make sense..:h Rant over...:M

My question is whether this is unique to California ONLY...:h or do other States do this as well....Thanks....Dennis

The one time I took my motorhome on a few of the toll roads in Illinois some times I was charged the passenger car rate and some times I was charged the three axle rate. I have an IPASS due to frequent trips to Illinois and was using that. (They no longer require a special IPASS for motorhomes.)

Our GPS is set to "avoid all toll roads". I'll just go around. The other day I got a bill from a local toll road that I never use. It took 30 minutes of my time to pay a $1.25 toll online. It was confusing where to go to pay it online, then I had to enter a super long account number and a super long bill number. Just horrible.

I think I know who built the computer system for that toll road....

LOL.

I understand avoiding toll roads in the first place, but disconnecting the toad, having the wife drive it, pay the toll and then reconnecting after the toll has been paid. For what purpose, to save a couple of bucks. Lordy!

If you are retired, and have "no where to go, and all day to get there", why worry about toll roads. What a rip-off.

You paid a toll for not having driven on the toll road?
What I post is my 2 cents and nothing more. Please don't read anything into my post that's not there. If you disagree, that's OK.
Can't we all just get along?

4 whopping cylinders on Toyota RV's. Talk about great getting good MPG. Also I have a very light foot on the pedal. I followed some MPG advice on Livingpress.com and I now get 22 MPG! Not bad for a home on wheels.

Just got a notice that the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel toll goes up 01 Jan 14. Standard car/truck/suv is still $12.

A motorhome is a class 9 vehicle, and cost $17 either way. With a toad, it becomes a class 11 vehicle and cost $28...so you would save $1 by disconnecting and driving the MH and toad separate.

A motorhome with tag axle is a class 10 vehicle, and cost $21. With a toad, it becomes a class 12 vehicle and cost $35. A $2 savings if you disconnect.

Just checked my charges for Florida turnpike using the Sun Pass tolling. Guess my 42 ft Gulfstream does a pretty good job hiding the Susuki toad. Over half of the time, I was charged for two axles rather than the four actually on the road.

Just curious...what "law" exactly do you think was broken...???? Cheating the government out of $5 that they were trying to cheat me out of?..:h....perhaps..but I checked California law books and found nothing relating to "scamming the toll booth"....just sayin....:W....Dennis

The same law that compelled you to unhook the toad to avoid paying the higher toll. Just sayin... :W

Q: Do multi-axle RVs and cars pulling trailers pay less than commercial trucks?
A: No. State law (Streets and Highways Code Sec. 30150.5) requires BATA to base toll charges on the number of axles on a vehicle. The current toll collection system can only differentiate between vehicles based on axles. It is not set up for either electronic or manual toll collection based on other factors such a vehicle type.

By the way, you will never convince anyone that california doesnt have a law covering that or any other possible way you could think of to get out of paying a higher toll or tax for anything. You're talking about california you know. :B.

Thanks, everyone for your input...it's been fun. I see that other states do the same as California. Not right, IMHO, but it appears they're all in collusion in some way. I guess it's more like "buyer beware".. in this case it's "traveler beware". For those who find it too much trouble to unhook your toad, my hats off to you. For me, it only takes but a minute or two. At $5/minute, well, that comes out to $300/hr...not chump change, so I'll keep scamming the toll booth..:W

Merry Christmas to all...and to all a good night......Dennis
