How much of a strain to tow a2008 Saturn vue behind a 1995 class a 35 ft 460 ford unit only has 28k and is perfect. Is it worth it to tow without putting a strain on it THANKS

What no one had mentioned is that if you go the go, you must have the whoa.

Braking is also considered in a max GCVW rating. Even though you will most likely have aux. brake system such as brake buddy, stopping the rig will be interesting if it fails. Stay within the manufacturer's weight restrictions.

Interesting... How does a welder/fabricator "upgrade" the "tow load" or technically stated the certifications or ratings? Answer... they can't!


Well, actually, YES, a properly certified upfitter shop CAN change the certified ratings! However, I wasn't concerned about the "ratings", I was only concerned with getting the job done, safely. we accomplished that. the modified hitch towed the load just fine. Again, nothing bent, nothing broke, nobody was injured or died.
Success beats the numbers, and I normally refuse to play the "WHAT IF" game.

Follow some of the advice here and do the numbers to be safe.
May want to have the hitch strengthened some and be sure to install toad braking. Knowing how to handle down hill descents are usually the problem for some and not with climbing mountains.
Strains are usually on the transmission if they're going to be anywhere.
Having said this and with a 98 gasser, we pulled a ton over specs. and for years, all over the US, with no ill effects, other than making some allowances for long 6% grades. Again it was with the 4L80E GM transmission for being the weak link. Your Ford tranny, should have a much better rating.

Looks to me like according to the experts here you can't tow---they don't even understand up grading the hitch-----No hitch weight involved to amount to anything and if the frame and hitch are adequate hook up and go. Look for reasons to do things not reasons not to, you will get more done.

Most likely with the Ford chassis, you're good with the GCVW rating, unless you're grossly overloaded with your GVWR, now.
Then there's the hitch, itself, which is most likely 3500 or 5000lb and if you tow 4 down the hitch weight rating doesn't come in to play at all. So now, how much does the coach, fully loaded and then, the car weigh for doing the math. I weigh ours at the truck stations along the interstate, at no charge and nary a problem ever, when they're not busy with trucks lined up.
All these ratings should be on a closet door in the coach somewhere and even though I don't advocate it, there's a lot of leeway to be had with weights and measures and if some overloading was a real factor, then that's all you'd hear about among these forums, with so many leaving the driveway overloaded on a daily basis.
We pulled a ton over specs. all over the country with our old gasser on a Chevy chassis, but the only weak link was the 4L80E GM transmission, so one had to be diligent when climbing long 6% grades in high ambient temps. Even at that, it would just go into limp mode for saving itself and proceeding in low gear at 25mph max. gave another 25% in the rating, so it never became a real problem.

I would also check to see how well tyranny cooler works. Some of the old tyranny gears wasn't that great.My first hand info.

You have already read replies that give you the weight ratings. You have heard from people that say it can be done even though the weight rating is exceeded. Will it damage the motorhome? Probably not.

But no one has discussed the legal implications. In our litigation happy society pray that you do not have an accident and injure someone with an overweight tow vehicle behind the RV. Takes an accident specialist attorney about 60 seconds to look up your rig and the tow vehicle to find your legal vulnerabilities

You should not have a problem.... think about what it takes to push the car by hand ( once you get it going)... doesn't really take that much effort. I've towed with a 1978 MH on a P30, 454 Chevy, A ford F53 and my current Dutch Star.

I'll just add that we towed a ~3500 lb Toyota RAV4 automatic 4WD with a 1995 34' Coachmen Class A on an F53 chassis powered by a 460 V8 for about 5 years and ~30,000 miles with no problems.
