Watch your rear.

Just got a 30 ft. class C last fall and had to learn the hard way to watch the rear end swinging out when you make a sharp turn. Most of you probably know. I kind of did but forgot to watch. I needed to make a pretty sharp, left U-turn to re-enter the state park campground. My right side was a foot or less from a log fence so the rear, side scraped the logs ($2,300 damage). Had a 5th wheel for 10 years and never damaged it but what you have to watch for is different in a 5th wheel.

Mine was one of those hydraulic posts. You know the ones. You could swear that they aren't there when you last looked but they jump up just in time for you to hit them! Gotta be hydraulics!!!

Another item you might want to watch out for with the swing, is when parked near a curb and you have the toad on the back. The tail swing will cause the toad to go toward the curb. It is awful hard on the passenger front tire and wheel of the toad. Always good to count on other peoples experiences.

Made a quick three point turn 50 feet my home recently to get better driveway access, plenty of room, no traffic, middle of the day. Too cocky. Totally forget about the stop sign sticking out a tad into the intersection and caught the slide topper roller just a bit. Nothing torn or damaged but it did make a loud noise and got my attention. I find gas stations with the big metal rails along the islands to be challenging, especially when dragging the toad along.

I have trained to be a bus driver trainer and tail swing is a very big issue. To see what it is I park the bus next to a curb and then have the student make a hard left turn WITHOUT going forward and to monitor via the mirrors the tail going over the curb! If you have bus bays at your local schools try it when school is closed, they should have a safety line painted on the sidewalk to keeps the kids away from the buses until they load. Also our practice is to use the outside turn lane if available to keep away from other vehicles as people tend to turn in to you! Same is true on curves. had 2 buses make contact on a curve on a street. One too far to right other too far to left in lanes and tail swing caught mirrors of the one bus!

But like anything else it takes attention to be a good driver and you would be amazed at how few there really are IMO.

My fist class C, I was not use to the height, and was looking at the ground instead of the tree limb above. I repaired the hole. Then backing my TT into the garage for winter two years ago, I tore up the awning fabric. I might as well took a knife to it, $600 fix. I blame it on age, so I bought another class C. TT still in the driveway, MH has the garage.

Crap!! One more thing to worry about...
We've had our 31' C for almost a year. I didn't realize that is a problem. I have been focusing on not cutting anyone short when I change lanes. Thanks for the heads up!

When in doubt get out and look what's behind, hanging over and to the sides of the rig. When backing up or fitting into a tight spot, best to have somebody guide you and move slowly. Be sure to lower TV antenna, disconnect hoses, TV and electrical cables, hose, etc. Police the area for tools or anything you may have dropped or left behind.

Thanks for sharing. I have a 32 foot C that I got last year. So far no opps for me yet. I hope I learn from your experience. Thanks again for sharing all of you.

I was a private pilot and I do make and use check lists. At my age, I have to sing "Happy Birthday" to myself to remember my own name.

It is easy to misjudge clearance of top, right side and rear of your rig. When in doubt, have somebody guide you or get out and look before you back up or maneuver into a tight spot. Then there's the unretracted TV antenna and cable TV cable. We ought to use check lists like pilots.

I uprooted a site number post in a storage lot when I first got involved in RVing and I've backed into a couple things since. Really try not to select "R" unless somebody's back there.
Campground Story: Man pulled out of the dump station in an older Class A and snagged a fencepost with the rear bumper. There was minor damage but it pulled the bumper back around three feet, revealing a storage tray. Owner exclaimed "Wow, didn't know it had that!" So, it's all in your perspective...
