What Dish Are You Using For Satellite TV

We already have a DirecTV account and will be using a Standard Def receiver. Being new to the RV world, we're wondering what others are using for a dish. We need to make a decision as to whether to use a portable dish sitting on the ground or install a dish of some sort on the roof. So what is everyone using and why? What are the advantages of a portable over a mounted roof dish or vice versa? Chuck

Get a 211K (not Z) and it will work great with your antenna and have the necessary connections for your TV.
What I post is my 2 cents and nothing more. Please don't read anything into my post that's not there. If you disagree, that's OK.
Can't we all just get along?

The KingDome is going to be picked up by Chuck tomorrow. 🙂

Tested the KingDome today and it works perfectly. Darn it. Now I will have to mount it on the roof. A big thanks to Ron. Now if I can only get him to come and install it:) Chuck

Fantastic! Glad it is still working. It has been quite a few years since I replaced it with the HD dish. I guess you could always use it as a portable if you can't convince Susan to install it on the roof. :B

Sandy, You don't need any special receiver. A standard Dish receiver like the one used in your home will do fine. We plan to move ours back and forth from home to the RV for the time being. Many get a second "bedroom" receiver for an additional $6.00 per month and put it in the RV. If you don't have one, you can get it from Dish, you will need to provide them with a form and copy of your RV registration to get it specifically for the RV. A big thank you to rgatijnet1 for the Kingdome satellite set up for free and for their hospitality. We plan to set it up temporarily today and check everything out before mounting it in the roof. I'll keep you posted. Chuck

I had a roof mounted winegard traveler on my previous TT and I couldn't use it half the time because of trees.

I now use a MP1 manual portable dish for versatility. I thought I would be disappointed going from an automatic to manual system but the MP1 is quite easy to set up. The only down side is it's a single LNB.

We use the Winegard Roadtrip in motion dome. We paid about $1,000 and I installed it myself to replace a KVH dome.

We only watch SD DTV in the MH even though I wired it with a SWM8 system.

Like others, we carry a DTV dish + tripod to aim where trees are a factor.

We like the In Motion feature for three reasons:

1. We can record stuff that airs while we are driving to be watched later on.

2. With the Antenna searching, we can position our rig (sometimes) to advantage in marginal reception sites.

3. We can listen to DTV music channels while driving.

As previously mentioned, the same people who developed Motosat (and forced out by a hostile takeover) have come up with the RF MOGUL.

They did it with a clean sheet and it has been the best. Never failed yet.

For the same service you are interested in, I use an 18" round dish from Direct.

Thanks for the input. I'm trying to decide if we will start off with a portable like a tripod set up initially, since for a while we will be only using the RV on weekends and vacations. Later when we are using it more, I can add a rooftop system. Or should I just install the rooftop and be done with it. That's the decision I'm trying to make and understanding what is working for others might help me make that decision. Also what units to consider. I have been a marine service tech for 40 years and have installed satellite systems on hundreds of boats. But I'm finding RV's, while similar, also have some distinct differences. Chuck

If we only used the MH on weekends and a vacation I personally wouldn't bother with sat at all. Because we have dish and a hopper at home I record everything we wish to watch than (before I had a dedicated hopper in the MH) would just take the receiver to the coach, plug it in and watch the recorded programs. I'm sure Direct TV has a comparable unit.

Baring that I would go with a carry out or something similar and worry about the roof top later when we would be taking longer trips.
