Tag adds stability as does a toad behind your coach.

Can I assume (bad I know) that a unit with a tag throws some of this out the window? I think from stability a tag is the best right?

The loading of the coach has more to do with the handling than the wheelbase. With a long wheelbase, if the front end is loaded light, the coach will wander. With a short wheelbase, with the front end loaded close to the maximum axle weight, the coach will handle fine.

Also depends on where the weight is, motor in front vs motor in back.

The one I've seen the most is 53%, but I have also seen some that say 50%. Then there are those who will say that the whole length to wheelbase ratio is a myth, but personally I choose to go by 53%. If you look at the second question under the FAQs at Henderson's Line-Up, a pretty good authority in steering and suspension, you will see that while they don't give a specific ratio, they do talk about shorter wheelbases being a contributing factor to porpoising.
