Which surge protector?

The only device I have in my 50 amp wiring that I can see is the relay that is mounted inside the electrical bay. So I assume that I need to add a surge protector or can these be factory installed elsewhere? I have looked at the in line plug in units but had a friend tell me that I should get one of the protector units that mount inside the electrical bay. I am not an electrician but want something to protect my circuts. Any suggestions?

Progressive is the way we went due to a improperly wired post at a new RV park. Ended up costing me a large amount of money. The Progressive would have checked the wiring before it allowed power to flow to the coach

The PROGRESSIVE INDUSTRIES EMS (50amp) # PT300 is what I have. Portable. I don't want to start cutting wires inside the motorhome. Some posters worry about theft. I personally have never heard of it....nor have I experienced it. The posters that do worry about it (theft) have never had it happen to them. It's always "someone I know" or "I heard....". So I personally think theft simply is so rare (if at all) to be simply academic. However, you can protect yourself with a padlock on the pedestal if you so desire.
Best price for the PT300 is at TweetysRV....$234.98 + S&H. I found out about these things (after 20+ years of camping) after a nearby lighening strike fried my fridge ($1400) and almost took out my transfer switch.($181 to diagnose and fix on-site)...so the $350 is really cheap.
