ASUS RT-AC66R Router

About 6 months ago our local cable company started weeding us low speed guy out by dropping their lowest 5MB INTERNET channel. This made me give up old 1960s routers and modem setup. I ended up getting the ASUS AC-66R WIFI and LAn Router.

This is really a nice setup here for me having four wired slots and the WIFI.

I recently lost my network HP Printer setup and only replaced it with a non network or wifi type printer.

this does a great job but of course only works with witch computer itis plugged into. It does use USB connections to work.

I am just now noticing that I have two USB ports on my ASUS router setup and have plugged the printer USB cable into that which noting worked of course haha...

Now I am reading that you ahve to setup a Printer port using address etc to make it work. If this would work then i guess any connection coming into the router could use the printer connected to the USB port of the router.

Things are mess in here at the moment from having to work on everything the past week and I can't locate my ASUS box whichhas the manual and password info etc in it...

Was wondering if anyone has done this before.. Hate to mess up my $150 dollar ASUS brand new router setup...

Or maybe there is another way to do this with a standard USB type printer. My printer is the HP PHOTOSMART C4640 model... great little printer...

Ya we have a all in one hp wifi unit. I think its a 8600 series one. We had a 8400 series one and i went to costco to buy all the inks it needed one day. It also needed a printhead but we were dealing with that. So the cost of the inks was approaching $85 or so I think, and cheap knockoff printheads were like $25? So I'm thinking for $100 I could get this one back up to snuff...when I see the 8600 series one on sale for I think $165? So I just bought a new one lol. Bonus is that I can print right from my phone without any special app or anything.

For instance though, the HP 8630 is going for $199.99 at office depot. The 8610 is going for $89.99.

If you get the combo pack for your c4640 that comes with a 60XL (so the larger black ink) and the normal sized color cartridge it is $75.49.

But, the reality is the 4640 has a better optical scanner I believe, and no auto document feeder to make it larger, so for compactness and movability, the one you have is likely a better choice. They do also make newer ones like yours, but I didn't have time to compare resolutions.

I'm out of the picture scanner game anymore. Todays cameras are so good, at least for me, I don't have any reason to scan in pics to touch them up hardly ever.

TPC - Yup I heard that... Well I have had two high dollar network printers fail on me over the years... Being an old retired guy I thought I would go cheaper perhaps... This is an all-in-one type printer and has scan and everything so it works great for what I need now. ALso small enough to take on off-road trips with me as well when playing emergency comms exercises...

Was just reading some other comments and heard someone say I do this with ASUS router too so why not try it haha...

I too always thought you would have to have a network printer thing as well...

Works for Ed above with same model so should work OK for me you would think haha...

Here I thought those were only for network storage devices...

If it were me I'd look into upgrading the printer though, the next time you need to buy ink. Seems new ink and/or new print heads (if your printers are replacable) cost more than a new printer itself sometimes.

Wifi printing is nice though....can put that sucker wherever ya want to. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks Ed - I'm pretty sure I can find my ASUS box haha... Was hoping to hear it isn't a big thing to setup the two high SPEED ports the 66 model has on the top panel... All of the other settings went without a hitch...

I will have to find a longer USB cables however. Will have to be around 12-15 feet long...

I was wandering about the U verses the R models... I got mine from AMAZON a few months back and thought I was ordering the U model but the R model came instead.. They look the same. I have all the secure password etc setup everywhere for the first time... We live kinda off to ourself so never really bothered with that before... With the newer router I can see a couple of secured routers sitting out there from the neighbors that I never saw before with my old router. So probably a good thing to have the controlled access these days...

I have my 66R hanging on two wall screws almost to the the top of the window. I run all of my cables up a corner PVC section to hide all the cables... Looks pretty neat... I do wish however the connections were not on the same panel the Antennas are on however. Make one want to look for right angle connections adapters haha..

The Manual for your ASUS router should be available on line.

Regarding the password question ... I assume you are speaking of the default password and never set up a new, more secure password access? Default access information can be found on the Internet also, such as here:
Default Password, etc.

For a few years I have been doing the same thing you are contemplating with no problems. I have an ASUS RT-N66U ... a similar but slightly older router to yours.
