Is there a way to get around the cost of a 411 call. The wife has verizon and she is charged $1.99 per 411 call. Is there another number that she could call and not be charged?

Either way, Internet acces is $30 on top of whatever service plan you have, and that's not part of the equation is it? The phones are on special and free all the time.

sounds better than sucking it up or dumping $400 into a "smart" phone.

Smartphones are free (sans the plan) unless you want the top of the line..Either way, calling it sounds like a cousin of the one I used.

free? of course that $100 a month fee doesn't count.

I said SANS THE PLAN..
And it's closer to $30

so is $64. exactly how much is your plan with the "free" phone?

Yes, I agree. And those sarcasms referred to have a way of disappearing. :R

There is Google's 4-1-1 service, there are also apps you can put on the phone such as the White Pages.com app.. These basically turn you into 4-1-1 operator once you get good enough at using them.

Google discontinued their free 411 service in November of 2010. There was also 1-800-BING-411, but that was turned off last year in June as I recall. 1-800-FREE-411 seems to be the best current choice.

Google itself can often provide the info on a basic search.. For example:

Google: Restaurants 48423,, Will get you listings for all restaurants in Davison, MI (zip code 48423)

Or Google: Archie's Restaurant, Davison, Mi. (or 48423) will get you one specific restaurant, followed by many others.

Google me.. Won't get you a phone number, but then neither will White pages or 4-1-1 cause ... Well.. I opted out.

What type of phone do you have? I would check with Verizon. They used to have a limit on the charges. You would be charged so much per 411 call until you reached a certain total then they would be free till the next billing cycle. I personally have a smart phone and use either google or I have a white/yellow pages app for that. I have found it is also highly useful to keep the destination campground number as you can call them and they are usually glad to dig up a number for you.
