Dead USB port

My notebook has three USB ports and one has been dead for a couple of weeks now. What could cause this and what can I do to restore it?

I had one quit working after a windows update. I ended up needing to re install the driver. But that was a work laptop and I do not remember if that was the only USB on the computer. I do remember I had forgot my A/C adapter to charge my phone and I needed to get it solved so I could plug my phone in to charge it.

Just had the same problem, 2 of my 4 ports stopped working. Called service and ran their tests. They said it had to go in for repairs. I needed to remove the power and remove the battery to get the serial number, had the battery out for at least five min. When I put the battery back in and plugged it in the ports worked! No more problems after about a week.

Then you're in luck. Most likely going to have to send it in for repair.

It's a nearly new computer and still under warranty but I was hoping a simple fix would work. I'll try removing the battery and see if that works. Thanks all.

The fact that it involves only one of three ports makes me believe its likely hardware related.

Sometimes USB ports get "stuck" in Windows. This was more common with XP than Win 7 or 8 but it does happen now and again. Try shutting it down and disconnecting the power supply and removing the battery. Leave out the battery for at least 10 minutes. Then put the battery back in and restart the machine. I've seen that fix a "stuck" port about 90% of the time.

Here's one inexpensive Sabrent 4-Port USB 2.0 Hub from Amazon.

A hub??

I didn't think they made those anymore. Everyone I know uses a switch.

This is not for Ethernet? Does it really make a difference for the OP expanding USB ports?

If rebooting it doesn't fix it, I suspect it is a hardware failure.
