External hard Drive for Dish VIP 211K

Can anyone share a link to an external hard drive that will work with my Dish VIP 211K receiver? I've been looking but haven't found one that says it is externally powered, it also has to have no more than 1TB storage. If anyone has one and can send me a link to it on Amazon or someplace please do. Thanks.

As jorbill2or stated, no issue. We typically loose power (due to travel) every week or two and never had an issue.

No it's "mated " to the receiver and expects to see it. If it becomes disconnected the reciever still works and when re connected it continues on recording and playing.

Do you just plug it in or is there some programming involved?

After you pay the 40.00 one time fee to activate your receiver as ready to record , plug it in. The 211 will "see" it and ask if you want to format the drive .. answer yes and the drive is reformatted to "dish" wiping out any data index that might be on it and making future video recordings only readable by the 211. receiver. It's now mated to the recorder and ready to go. Easy

Sounds easy, thank you.

If your 211 won't supply enough USB power for your HD, you can always use a Powered USB hub

You must call Dish and pay ~$40 before they'll activate the option. After that, ours set up itself.

The WD Passport should work fine. We used the similar WD "MyBook" HD for several years with our 211K until we upgraded to two Hoppers w/Sling DVR receivers.

I just used a Western Digital "My Passport" 1TB drive from Walmart. It is powered through the USB cable.

One of these and one of these. The little enclosure comes with a USB cable. After you install the hard drive in the enclosure plug it into your computer and format the drive. Then use the USB on your receiver. It will power the drive. really easy

I used a standard small hard drive in a USB case (laptop size hard drive) commonly used or sold as a backup drive. Laptop drive with USB out to the 211k or z works fine without external power. The 211 has enough to power a small drive like that via the USB. I had the same concern... don't
I paid 55 bucks on amazon for a 1tb drive tons of space works flawless. Forget about external power
