How far north will the winegard Carryout work with directv? Just curious, we are going to Alaska and will have it with us. Thanks.

Yep.
What I post is my 2 cents and nothing more. Please don't read anything into my post that's not there. If you disagree, that's OK.

There certainly is reception of DirecTV in Canada with a Carryout style antenna. Not very far, but it certainly is available. Our dome worked in Lake Louise, Calgary, Banff and the entire Highway 2 between BC and Calgary. It also worked in Eastern Canada from Toronto to Nova Scotia.
While in Lake Louise my dome had a signal strength of 60 while the open faced antenna next door still had an 80+ signal. So while I could not have gone much farther North, the open face antenna certainly could.

Although dish size does have some impact on signal strength, the real limiter is how far down toward the horizon the dish will tune. In many domes and the Winegard Trav'ler, that is 15-20 degrees above the horizon. With the satellites located above the equator, this means that about the furthest north you can tune their signal is the Juneau latitude. In fact, I have gotten DirecTV from Douglas, four miles south of Juneau across the channel. We were on a Trav'ler without modifications. By playing with the antenna geometry (I put a nickel in the antenna LNB arm pinch point) and got DirecTV in Valdez. Another major problem is that when tuning to within 15 degrees of horizontal in Alaska this puts a lot of mountains in the way.

No Alaska reception. A standard size DTV antenna can get some SD reception in AK but the satellite is so low the dish will actually be pointed at the ground when aimed correctly.
A dome will work into Southern Canada and possibly a bit farther N. but we were in Lake Louis and had reception but a very weak signal. The RV beside us with an open face antenna still had an 80+ signal.

Direct TV, you can forget alaska, as dish size is over 3 Ft.
Possible just into Canada.
