Route Planning Software for Android

I love MS S&T, but I'd really like to find an android app for my tablet that has similar functionality. The tablet is much easier to manage in the vehicle.
The app would need a built-in database and not rely on internet access but take advantage of it when available.
Or at least allow me to plan then download the trip with relevant POI's, etc along the route.

Oh well. Just dreaming.

Have used Sygic for over four years on 4 different android devices.

One license fee paid four years ago.

Currently on two phones and one tablet.

Updates are free and frequent.

I store only 4 local state maps on devices.

Can add and delete states/provinces at any time.

No broadband data required for navigation.

Based on Tom-Tom mapping.

Windows tablets with built in GPS are a bit scarce. I did locate an 8" Asus VivoTab which has GPS at the Microsoft Store for $149.

Be aware that programs such as Streets & Trips can not use the built in GPS without additional software such as Centrafuse Localizer or GPS Reverse. This software generates a virtual comport which makes the GPS appear as an external device.

Last fall I purchased a Winbook TW100 tablet with 10" screen which is a Microcenter store brand. It is presently selling for $149.99 in their store. It does not have a built in GPS but it does have a standard sized USB 3 port which allows me to plug in my Garmin eTrex GPS. I am running Streets & Trips and can also play out music and listen to audio books. Everything works great.

Here's an excerpt from the review: This is a Wi-Fi only tablet that connects to 802.11b/g/n networks on the 2.4 and 5GHz bands. GPS and Bluetooth 4.0 LE are both onboard, and I had no issue pairing the Tab 4 with a Bluetooth speaker.

Did you want the cellular model? I think the guy at Best Buy might be wrong.

OK, I just returned from Best Buy, where I bought an unactivated Samsung Tab4 for the Verizon network. The Samsung specialist there was clear that if a Tab4 is not compatible with a cell network like Verizon, Sprint, AT&T or whatever, it does NOT have real GPS in it and is WiFi only, which is of no use to me on the boat or in the boonies where there is no WiFi. It has an 8" screen and 16 GB drive, and I will install a MicroSD card soon. After it is fully charged, the first app I intend to install is CoPilot, then probably the Good Sam/Woodall app. Any other Android apps that are "must have" for RVers?

I don't have any experience with a Galaxy Tab 4 and CoPilot but I have used CoPilot on a Galaxy Tab 2.0 7 and it worked fine there. I don't have any reason to believe that it wouldn't work great on a Tab 4.

I have an old original iPad with a real GPS, runs an old version of Navionics for my boat great, but is so out of date that the iOS cannot be updated and will not install anything current like CoPilot. I am thinking of getting a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 to run both CoPilot and Navionics, all the reviews say the Galaxy tablets have real GPS. I need offline maps and real GPS. Does anybody have any experience with CoPilot on a Samsung Tab 4? Advice?

Portable 7" plus tablet shape/weight.
Runs Delorme Topo (windows 8.x?)
Touchscreen with/without stylus
Wireless Keyboard + Mouse capable
Integrated GPS, Wifi, Bluetooth
Expandable storage (SD cards to store programs and data)
Bootable to SD Card (Can boot to an optimized 'GPS bundle' partition)
6-10 hrs battery life, several days in standby/off
Linux capable is a plus
No interest in 3D graphic games

I might settle for smaller screen and capabilities to get integrated GPS and use as a companion to desktop version of Topo.

We have an old EeePC clamshell (notebook) with touchscreen that would be perfect, but it is only WinXP and won't run later versions of Delorme.

Clamshell format would be secondary choice if features and price were right.

Anyone find something like the above?

I want to avoid Windows as the operating system on my computers whenever possible as it is a CPU hog and easily hacked. I tried the latest Android Nexus for a week but it has an even worse user interface than Windows 8. Went to the Apple iPad Mini and it is fantastic.

On paper the other OS and computers look better but in actual use the Apple operating systems and computers put the rest to shame.

I already own multiple copies of Streets & Trips.

So do I but wanted all to know that this is not a long term solution as S&T will become dated, unsupported and may not work well on future OS (like Win 10 or 11 or 12).

Near term, I will keep using mine.

The Dell Venue tablet uses an Intel Atom processor running Windows 8.1. I have an Acer netbook that uses an Atom processor using Win7 and it runs Streets and Trips fine. A Streets and Trips install takes up about 1.2GB of storage. So the Dell Venue should run Streets just fine.

There are ways to move the map files on Copilot for Android to the external SD. It should work with Android versions that still allow moving an app to the internal SD. Newest Android versions stopped doing this. You must move to internal SD first. Then it involves physically moving from internal SD to external SD of the Copilot's com.alk folder and changing some path references to external SD in the user.cfg file. Google this and various methods will come up but the one that seems to work most consistently is actually cutting and pasting the entire com.alk folder from internal SD to the external SD. Google for directions. Try it with the free version before buying. You can always uninstall it if it does not work. Test with one map region download - after all moves have been made. I have it working on my external SD card. If I update Android to a newer rom it will likely not work any longer.

Copilot has been asked about this for a long time and now their answer is it does not work on new versions of Android and it is Android's fault. They admit now that it can be done on older Android.


As said, all map updates are free - but if you want to continue live traffic after one year, there is a $10 annual fee for the traffic service and the traffic service does require a data connection - so no wifi unless you have a hotspot always running while you drive.
