Living in an RV Full Time in Myrtle Beach

I just took a job in the Myrtle Beach area and will be moving down there by myself (family can't move until next year). I was thinking about buying a Class A or a TT and living in it for the next year when I'd buy a home. I was thinking it would be warm enough for year round living. But, RV parks seem to be a bit pricy. Has anyone lived full-time in this area? Any suggestions on locations? Is this viable? I was thinking it would be fun...but maybe not.

Thanks for pointing it out.
Sure Hope I didn't scare the OP thinking he just took a job in Florida! :B

As much as I like Rv'ing I would think you'd be better off renting a house or an apartment. If you've never done a lot of RVing and made up your mind that it's for you, full timing in one can be a shock. If you rent a house or apartment it's also pretty easy to walk away. Not so easy in an RV. You also won't have as much to contend with as far as maintenance or weather.

The reality and cost of it is NO. Especially if you are going to do it for just one year.

1. First of all to buy an RV for just one year is not prudent. If you buy new you will loose a ton of money selling it in one year.

2. Monthly Park rates are not cheap. And in most Florida CG's they charge EXTRA on top of the daily rate quoted for your electric usage. And in tourist town Myrtle Beach? Double the rates of elsewhere!

3. The money you will spend for an RV, park rates, electric, etc. would be better off going for your down payment on your new home instead of up in smoke.

You will never recuperate the cost of the RV when you go to try and sell it. And certainly not if sold in Florida. Selling prices are low and inventory high on RV's down here. Don't ask me how I know.:(

There are TONS of real nice mobile home parks in Florida AND houses for rent. And then you can deduct some of the rental costs within your deduction for moving expenses.

IMHO I would fore go buying an RV and rent for the year that you need before you buy your home. Just saying.

Welcome to the forum. How lucky are you getting relocated to the sunshine state! :C

All kinds of people live in the area full time because they work there. But most don't live within walking distance of the beach. Consider a motel in the Conway area. Its about 15 miles from the beach. Not a bad drive on 501. Streets and trips shows about 10 motels in or around Conway. And you don't have to sell an RV at the end of the year and take a beating on it.

Welcome to the forum!

If you can afford a good class A, that would be the way to go as you don't need to worry about a heavy duty tow vehicle. Since you plan to park it for a year, you can save quite a bit by buying a motorhome with a gas engine instead of diesel. Buying a good used one will minimize any $$ loss if you sell it after buying a house, or you may decide that you like it so much that you will want to keep it! And, you can tow your car behind you when making the move. And, if you do have to evacuate, it would be pretty easy to do so. You do have to look at how much stuff you have, and how much you will take with you.

Do you have any experience with rv's? If not, you need to make sure you understand what is involved with living in a trailer, fifth wheel or motorhome.

Going back, I see that you will be living alone and the family is staying in Cleveland. With that in mind, you can choose something that is smaller. You could opt for a travel trailer or fifth wheel, but you have to factor the cost of a good tow vehicle. If you decide on a trailer/FW, you want one that is considered a four season trailer. Granted, Myrtle Beach is in SC, but having something with four season insulation will make it much more efficient for heating and cooling.

15 miles NW in Conway SC is an RV and Mobile Home Park if you don't mind a short drive. Reasonable monthly rates. I checked reviews but no recent ones. http://www.williamsonrvparks.com/home.html

Unless you have the good fortune to be able to abandon work for a few days and pull out in the event a storm approaches (i.e. Ana with 80mph winds night before last) you will need to be in a place that allows extensive (and expensive) tie-downs.

Even then I wouldn't want to ride out the wind and rain in a TT and I've been in some pretty severe thunderstorms from time to time while traveling.
