Scooters

I've seen many posts talking about the cars that people tow. I was thinking of getting a hitch carrier and using a scooter to get around. Opinions? Good idea? Bad idea?

I carry a 1986 Honda Spree and have never had a problem. Not sure how a campground can ban a licensed, insured, street legal scooter. State Parks can require a separate vehicle sticker. I've never been bothered by police because states pretty much have reciprocity with other states.

One of the larger campgrounds in Myrtle Beach will not allow gas Scooters, or Motorcycles. They must be "stored/ parked" just inside the main gate. In a 300 acre campground would be a long walk to your site. Their property they can make their own rules.

I don't get any joy at all from hearing a Harley, or similar, motorcycle rumbling around a CG so I would support any CG from doing so.

The gas scooters most of us are talking about here are extremely quiet & don't deserve to be penalized like the noisy motorcycles.

Yeah, those 50cc 2-stroke scooters are just wonderful coming back from the bar at 2am....

I was also considering a couple of cheap scooter/mopeds to take with us. But as some others mentioned, some parks will not allow them. Plus after looking at the cost for a couple of them and then a rack of some sort to carry them, it just ended up being cheaper for us to get a brand new tow dolly and tow my little Toyota Yaris.

I have an Xterra. Not something you want to tow.

Depends on what you are towing with.

I am looking at the Thor Axis.

Just picked up a Versa Haul hitch carrier for my class c. I have a Honda Pcx150 that fits just fine. I ride all the time so the scooter is a good tote vehicle.

Not always true. Police do not always know what others states do and don't do. And they really don't care. Especially on rules of the road. It may be more of a hassle and not worth their time on a scooter, unless you were doing something stupid.

They can ban whatever they want that is not protected by specific laws (ie service dogs). If they don't like red Mini Coopers, then they can ban red Mini Coopers.

If you've been a motorcyclist in the past you will probably like scooters. If you've not been a motorcyclist I predict the scooter will be a waste of money and won't be ridden.

I am renting a Thor Axis in June to see how I like it. The hitch can hold 500lbs. So I know the carrier and the scooter can not exceed this weight. That's why I thought about a150cc. Maybe I need a little bigger. Suzuki has a Bergman 200, honda have a 250, Yamaha I'm not sure. So not only is the weight important but the length as well. Have to look at that.

Have you looked at the Yamaha TW200? A street legal crossover with a seat long enough for 2 <200# people. 250# about dry weight I think.
