travel trailer insurance

Hello All,
It's our first time renewing the insurance for our TT, we just got whatever they were selling at the dealership when we bought the trailer. Is there anything particular we should be looking for as far as coverage goes, or a company to insure through?? Thanks for all the comments!

In most states, once you arrive at the campground and unhook the trailer from the tow vehicle all bets are off.

If the kid cuts through your campsite, trips on the power cable, splits his head open on the trailer jack and parents sue you; TAG, you are it!

While you are driving the tow vehicle to the hospital trying to keep from being sued, the campfire gets out of hand and sets your trailer on fire. Guess what??? Your tow vehicle and home are insured. Your trailer and your bank account are toast.

That is why they write specialized RV policies.

Have you ever asked your agent if your TT is damaged while being towed if they will fix it. Most often coverage when being towed by your vehicle is for liability only. Not comprehensive/Collision - which means the TT is toast and you're out of luck. Ask your agent.

Our RV insurance is through Progressive.

We are full timers and therefore somewhat restricted on who we could even get the needed coverage from. Of the ones we compared Progressive was the best coverage at the cheapest prices. We ended up putting vehicles with them also because they saved us almost 35% on those policies.

Another reason we like Progressive is that it is true paperless.

Our trailer is our home. We needed blanket coverage for all possibilities. The dog and storage unit, once covered under our homeowners, disappeared when we sold the house. And I wanted coverage on trailer when it is not hitched up.
Once my car insurance term is up, we'll likely do both car and trailer with one carrier.

That's fine until a tree falls on it anywhere else.

Most people insure their travel trailer with their automobile insurance carrier. Reason - liability coverage extends from the pulling vehicle when the trailer is attached to it. The policy you buy usually coverage the trailer for physical damage, but not for liability. Some states may be different.

I just insured our first TT with Progressive. Completed everything online. As a fulltimer, the policy was great. Included coverage for my storage unit, coverage for our dog, replacement value, towing and several other bells and whistles. Our trailer is new and we are newbies, so I wanted blanket coverage at least for year one. Total premium was under $500 for the year.

Who insures your truck and other vehicles? Have you spoken to your agent? If you trust your agent you might want to have a sit down and discuss your trailer.
