Upholstery job on dinette completed other than installing the table, so I arrived back under the vanity area and began the rewire job for my
Atwood water heater as it did not work on AC voltage when we took our trip last October. The heater is new, installed by the dealer due to them overlooking it during winterizing (along with some other water lines and a filter).
After checking all the AC and DC wiring last fall, I discovered no DC current at the relay on the tank which kicks in the AC current for the element. Not to mention the "technician" used oversized (read too large) wire nuts rather than properly connecting the DC lines to each other. Having no schematic, I searched the internet and found them on Atwood's site. After comparing with my wiring, none of what the dealer did made sense, so I emailed Atwood customer service. They not only answered me within a day but the rep also provided his phone number so he could explain what I
should be seeing, but was not.
The dealer "technician" bugged the DC relay for the AC into the DC wiring for the gas, yet nothing worked (although an improper installation, it still should have turned on when the propane was operating). So I reached for the connection and the wire fell out of the wire nut he had used. At that point (yesterday) , I completely ripped out their wiring, installed another switch for the AC element (one came with the unit per Atwood, but was not used) and reconnected everything with solid connectors. No water in the unit but I did flip the switch and heard the relay activate, so hopefully it's now operational
