Fantasy Tours Albuquerque Balloon Fest

I thought I would start a thread and chronicle my experiences on the first tour I have taken with Fantasy Tours thru FMCA.

Thursday, Oct 2. Parking and registration.
They were very efficient parking us. The lot is all dirt and a few pieces of gravel. It was sold as right on the Balloon Fest grounds overlooking the launch. I will post some pictures but that is a fail. It is facing the motorhome across from me. The registration was ok and a bit chaotic but it got done. You would think instead of 330 for snacks and questions, they would put out a few snacks and cold drinks when we are registering. I know that Foretravel does that and we did it at rallies we have run in the past.

THought I would add a picture to this initial post.

Yup, will not do a tour again. Thought it might be fun and we went with friends. I saw that escapees group across from us and a couple of my friends were in it as well. We will try next year again but by ourselves.

John, sorry you had such a rotten time with Fantasy Tours. Next time, do it on your own and I think you'll enjoy it more.

We were there (& still are, tonight) for 12 nights. We signed up to crew (we're in our 70's) so we were on the field daily. We got a free balloon ride for 1-1/2 hours and other perks. We also got free entrance all day long and we were free to come and go. We had free shuttles from our motorhome door with very friendly school bus drivers. We dry camped and will last 12 days without dumping. However, there is a pump out service and a water fill service. We even got the morning paper delivered daily at our door - free.

Yes, you have to time yourself for the traffic. There are 600 balloon pilots, their crew of 10 or so, and tens of thousands attending the Fiesta. We expected traffic. However, the roads were open both directions after the morning ascension until approximately 3:30. We were able to do local things and have a late lunch in a restaurant and therefore didn't need dinner. It didn't inconvenience us at all.

We were with a group of 40 RVs with the Escapee Club members. We paid $275 for 12 nights which we thought was an awesome price.

Your experience is why we would never do a tour for anything. Hope you return some day!

I have three different galleries of photos up on my smug site.

Feel free to look at them. Some of them show the campground and the balloons landing among them as well as night glows and liftoffs.

Well, here is some more on my impressions of the Fantasy Tour.

I will come back to the Balloon Fest but not use this tour company. When we called the person on the phone lied and said we would have 50 amps and dog walkers and be on grass. Well, we were on reclaimed landfill west of the launch field where you could not put a grill on the ground and had to have it up 2 feet. They had guys with sniffers going around too.

I will say that the water pressure was good and the electric did not get a work out as it was not very hot but it was 110 -114 volts so if it was hot I would think that it would go down far enough that my Power management system would shut it down.

THey ran out of food one night and it was not very good that night either. The next night they had too much pizza and then the final farewell dinner was nip and tuck on if they had enough and they barely had enough. THey also serve it so it was all portion controlled.

They had tours during the BF and if you went on the tour then the next day the weather did not work out you missed two days of BF activities. One of the best days for seeing balloons they were at Sky City. They tell you that you will have 9 days there but they take you in two days before it starts. I understand that as the traffic was less but I would have expected it to last the entire time. THe people were attentive but you get tired of the same old jokes and the stupid way they do things like picking cards for when a table goes up. Usually that is not a big deal but when you are the last table and they run out of food it is a bigger deal. THen you have the tours. Nowhere do they put in the restrictions. That it goes too long without dog walkers or that it is a lot of walking on uneven ground. I was with friends and he has a cane and there was no way he could do that walking at 6-7k feet, Also we would have to check our cameras if they took video, what about my phone. I decided that it was 8 hours that I had no desire to see.

My next issue is they said they would have the busses running back and forth to old town and to the scandia tram and we would be able to leave when we wanted. Well they waited till 44 people were not he bus. That is not running them all day. So you waste an hour sitting and waiting.

I think that the tour was poorly organized and way overpriced for what you get. It was our first tour and probably our last. Adventure was there longer and went in one day after us. They were dry camping but had breakfast and dinner each night. That is kind of important as many nights the police restrict traffic and you can not get into the campground as the roads are closed to traffic to make everything one way the wrong way. Kind of like hurricane evacuation.

Now saying this, I will say that the Balloon Fest was wonderful inspire of the costs and the fact that everything costs a bunch. I would do it again. I will post a couple pictures here and then a link to my website that has three galleries of pictures.

And they fly and land right over the campground and in it too.

We are in the VIP with water and electric. Adventure is next to us dry camping.

Friday was an all day event. First we took a bus to the sky tram and then went up and had lunch. The food was very good and the trip up in the tram was over crowded. I understand this week they are running them with 50 people in them and the line went out the door and into the lot when we were coming down.
Then we went to some silly Torquise place and had a small talk on it and they had a gift shop. The only really interesting thing was seeing a 45 foot bus maneuver around a walgreens parking lot,

The next morning Oct 4th we were up early on Saturday and on the buses at 530 and saw the dawn patrol lift off and the rest of the mass ascension went up about 715 till about 745 and they were landing all over the rv lots and around. The winds were getting nasty and they were putting down. We had a good show and tell that afternoon with a balloon pilot and his bask and burners.

Today the 5th is Sunday and no balloons went up due to winds. The bulk of the group headed out on a few buses to Santa Fe for the day

Some impressions of the place is everything cost money and they shut down the roads so you really can not get in or out of the campground. The campground is dusty and they are spreading water so it is a combination of mud and dust. The Fantasy tours was not and is not as it was billed when talking to them on the phone. It is an issue that is not found by us alone but rather it is the talk of the bus on the trip. It is ok but not what was promised.

Which parking area does the Fantasy Tour park in?

Which parking area does the Adventure Caravans group park in?

Thanks!

The balloon festival is "generic" (available to everyone), however "Fantasy Tours thru FMCA" is not.

Since FMCA is *exclusively* an organization for Motor Home owners, your post probably belongs in the Class A Motor Home forum - rather than - General RVing Issues.

There is not one word about FMCA or motorhome mentioned.
Yep, actually drove to all of these places---in the last eight years. Missed Rhode Island and New Jersey.

John S thanks for posting this. I will be following. Thinking about doing this. But had a real bad experience with Fantasy Tours, but that was in Mexico. Hoping a USA tour would be different.

We had a nice dinner last night and they had a combo playing some horrible music. IT was very loud in the tent so you could not hear them on the other side. THey had balloons up in the air early today, friday the 3rd and they floated right by the coach.

Did the FMCA tour a couple of years age. Best thing about the tour other than all the Balloons was that the tour included afternoon tours around the area including Santa Fe and some dinners with entertainment. Our days were busy. Getting up before day brake to catch the bus to the launch field got old so a couple of days we sacked in and had our morning coffee watching the balloons fly directly overhead only a couple of hundred feet.

Fantasy is the "official" tour operator for several organizations including Good Sam so it is applicable to general RV.

Hi John! Hubby and I are also at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. We're with the SKP Boomer group, over in standard parking. We've been here since Tuesday. I volunteered to crew a balloon, today was safety training over at the launch field.
