Just not true. When setup correctly towing doubles is no different than a single. Maybe you can explain why i got stuck behind an suv towing a tent trailer that could not go over 50mph without it trying to swap direction while my double bumper pulls at 68 1/2 ft long is perfectly stable at 70 ?

I'll try to explain.
Probably because his rig was not set up correctly. He most likely did not have enough tongue weight.

While your rig may be perfectly stable at 70mph, probably due to proper loading and setup, I think that if you had to do an emergency maneuver your double tow rig would act quite different from a single trailer being towed and would be much harder to control. I would say that towing doubles is quite different than towing single.

Got some data to back that up, or is that just your opinion?

Of course there are brakes on the trailer and the Jeep. Might be able to get VacaValleyTruck's take on it next week. Maybe the owner will tell us how its working out.

I spent a few years hiring and firing truck drivers and except for a small minority of em, i wouldnt want to see them pulling rv doubles. And yes not every officer knows the regs which is why i verify what i am doing is legal. Wind or passing semi's is not a problem either as everything is set up right and tows straight. I can understand people having doubts about pulling doubles and you should not do it if you have any reservations, but i can assure you i am as safe if not more so than you are.

Doubles always gets a stronger reaction from people. I doubt most people including myself have even done it. The facts are with the proper license and equipment it is perfectly legal in ca. I guess you can try to change the law if you don't want people to do it.

And the trailer should have brakes also. It is not like the truck will be doing all the work.
Now, if it was me I wouldn't do it. I double with a 5th wheel and a boat which is very stable.

I have seen a pickup towing a TT with a 20ft+ boat behind here in Utah.
The TT appeared to be 20 -24 ft also.
The total combination had to be over 65 feet.
I will not be doing that any time soon.
The boat may have had surge brakes.

And why, exactly, would you doubt that? A 3/4 ton Ford is easily rated for north of 20000lbs GCWR. They sell class-5 receivers rated for 17,000lbs or more these days. Draw-Tite (Or maybe Reese/Valley?) make a service vehicle hitch receiver that can be attached to almost any frame rails that is rated for 14,000lbs gross. They sell brake-buddies for toads.

Point is: The equipment is certainly out there and available.

As for the legality, I've seen various opinions offered over the years for California in particular, but can't recall seeing a definitive answer in the statutes with my own eyes that difinitively states it one way or the other.
