Mini has announced the third generation Cooper to be available in March. Of course, I already have one on order. 😉

Specs are impressive! Cooper gets 52 mpg, Cooper S gets 41 mpg and Cooper D is 67 mpg! These figures are from a UK site. For comparison, my Clubman gets around 40 mpg overall and my first generation MCS (the one with a supercharger) gets 27 mpg.

I posted a series of pictures showing installation of a Roadmaster baseplate on my 2008 Clubman, look for pictures of making my new Mini towable in the spring.

Edited to correct a typo in the conversion site I used.

No, Mini is made by BMW. You're thinking of Smart cars, those are made by Mercedes.

Yes, yes, that is right,thanks.

Hybrids and diesels are both great. Anything that reduces fuel dependency is a good thing.

A 5 series Beemer with a 2 liter diesel ? How common is that here ? Tested in 2008.

I know that things are different in Europe because of the high cost of fuel. But what works in Europe won't necessarily fly in North America. Not sure that BMW would sell many 2 liter 5 series cars here.

I love diesels. I have had several and have one now. My first one was a 1982 Rabbit and I could legitimately get 60 mpg at 60 mph all day long.

But . .

I do think the current hybrids are terrific though. My daughter has a Prius. She called me the other day as she was cruising down the highway on her way to work. Said she was getting 54 mpg at that particular moment. She says she averages about 50 mpg overall (somewhat lower in winter). That's pretty hard to beat.

The standard on how the milage is figured varies a bit from country to country. Even with that said the things that make an engine efficient in one country will make an engine efficient in another. The new MINI should have some very respectable milage numbers using the CAFE standard.

Another comparison

Prius has a combined fuel efficiency of 50 mpg, according to Official US Gov Site

Diesels kick azz on hybrids. Two reporters from the London Times pitted a Prius against a BMW 5 series diesel going from London to Geneva. Results

Yes, they still require premium fuel. If you run regular, mileage will be a bit less.

Can't fault your math GPG. I cheated and used a conversion site. When I went back to check, your figures came up. I must have made a typo so I will correct my original post.

4.5l = 1.19 US gallons and 100k = 62 miles.

I get 52 mpg for the base model

D Model - 67 mpg

S model - 41 mpg

Please let me know if my math is wrong.

Do they still require premium fuel ?

Notice that the best figure of 3.6l/100k (67mpg) is for the Cooper D. The diesel engine model probably won't be available in the US.

Yes Frances, that's for the 3rd generation, 2014 Mini. It has two all new turbo charged engines, a 1.5 liter 3 cylinder engine in the Cooper and a 2.0 4 cylinder in the MCS.

I find those numbers very hard to believe. Where did you find this information? Are you sure it's not in kilometers?:@

I'm curious, too...if those are 2014 model stats and are actually in miles-per-gallon, that'd be a HUGE improvement over even this year's models.

Real-world stats on the 2013 base Cooper is generally reported as about 32 mpg, and the 2013 "S" hovers at around 30mpg.

Yes, I'm sure of my figures. 😉

Actual mpg posted on Mini.com (UK) is:

4.5 liters/100 kilometers for Cooper
3.5 l/100 km for Cooper D (probably not going to be available in the US)
5.7 l/100 km for the Cooper S

So converting to US gallons gives the figures I posted above. Amazing, isn't it? All this from a turbo charged gasoline engine!

Sure that's gallons and not liters, and miles and not kilometers?
