Winter Camping

Just a quick question to see how many people out there camp out in the cold/and or snow?

My husband says he will NEVER do this. I just want him to hear that it can be fun to do. Thanks in advance.

Seriously though, winter is our primary camping season. There are several benefits: less crowds, no bugs, pretty scenery, and more comfortable (nothing worse than being hot and sweaty!)

Considerations: Winter camping does require some thought and preparation. Cold weather can be hazardous and can present life-threatening situations, because conditions sometimes change from bad to worse in the blink of an eye. So, we don't go as far off the beaten path when heavy snow is in the forecast. We also carry shovels, full propane, extra water and a reliable cell phone (and chargers!) Chains are a good idea too. Bring plenty of warm clothes, and extras of everything, in case of an emergency.

The bummer is that many campgrounds in our area are closed in the winter. Some, up in the snow country, used to be year-round, have become seasonal. Just takes a little more research to find fun, safe places to take the family. The kids are especially fond of winter camping.

In closing, I don't recommend winter camping. ๐Ÿ™‚

One more part of winter camping, well at least up in flagstaff. Leaving ones shoes outside because of all the volcanic MUD that sticks like glue to them. Never seen anything like it.

We not only have camped in our TT when it is cold and snowing but we have camped in a tent in the same weather.
And have not been the only one in the campgrounds.

We live in damp and rainy Washington, but when the sun comes out, it is glorious. Our least favorite camping season is Summer when most places are full, bugs are out doing their things and winter camping is the best of all. Now you have to know, you have to bring extra with you as being cold is really not fun. We carry both a small electric heater, a Little Buddy heater, a feather bed, an extra pair of shoes each, raincoats and winter coats, wool socks, hats, scarves and gloves and even long johns. (But you just have to learn how to feigh sleep until your spouse finally has to get up and turn on the heaters, coffee pot etc)

I also have a tuff time getting the rest of the family to the snow.
With mods my fair weather trailer is good to at least -5F.

We just back from Branson. Defiantly one of the better times of year! Little to no crowds overall but SDC was packed. Much easier with kids. Got spots right next to the shower house also. Only tip I'd have is for a dehumidifier. Had to buy a squeegee to clean the windows of the class c before I could drive it.

We do and just love it. -15 (F) the last night on our most recent trip a couple weeks ago. Some friends are heading out in a couple days (Christmas) and I wish we could join them, but we probably should do some family time.

Yes, it is more effort in the winter and your rig may benefit from some simple modifications first, but in our opinion it is well worth it. If you do go out; pick mild (winter) weather for your first few trips, bring appropriate clothing, don't rush or try to travel far in a day, keep your options open, and enjoy.

I camp all year round. Why, just last weekend, I camped in the cold miserable low 60s. Seriously, though, it never gets cold enough in my part of Texas to even consider the temperature as a roadblock to a camping trip. Same with the heat. I never find it too hot to camp. The only weather that we get that makes me nervous is wind. But, that's only during the trip to the camp ground.

That is our favorite time of year! We don't go out in the snow because my husband has to work if it is snowing but cold doesn't bother us. Great time of year for sitting around the campfire and hiking.
