We lost our two dogs to old age in the past 3 years. Our yellow lab was my best friend in the whole world and our rescue dog helped change my life. Now we are both retired and are looking to get a smaller dog - maybe. DW likes the King Charles Spaniel but I'm concerned about separation anxiety and yipping when we leave the camper. A smaller dog would probably be best for us at this time. Appreciate your thoughts.

google 'help me pick a breed of dog'.
the best idea is to pick out characteristics you desire and see what they suggest that fits your desires and lifestyle.
If you pick what fits, you will have a much better chance of loving your mut and them thriving in your environment.
good luck.

Just checked our bank account, we can retire today if I stop spending money now.

The majority of responses here will recommend the breed that the responder has/prefers, not necessarily the best choice for you.
Generally speaking, small dogs are more likely to be yappers/barkers when left alone, BUT any dog can develop anxieties, be improperly trained, etc., and be a yapper/barker.
I'd recommend going to a dog show and talking to breeders about the dog. I have found that breeders tend to be more honest about the negatives of the breed than owners will be - mostly because they have experience with a large number of dogs, not just a select few (and they don't want to dog coming back because of an ill match). Once you narrow down the breed(s) you're interested in, then you can consider rescuing through a breed rescue, general rescue group, or breeder to find the right dog for you.
Also, look online for a "breed selector" program - I think AKC has one. You plug in things like how much grooming do you want to do, how much exercise do you to give the dog, etc., and the program will identify a variety of breeds that most meet your responses. It's a nice way to narrow your options down.

Most King Charles Spaniels I've dealt with professionally have been real low key, lovable, great personality and easily trained. If you can't tell, I love this breed, except they have a very high incidence of heart problems sometimes starting at a pretty young age. If you find a line where this is not a problem, go for it. I think they are much like miniature retrievers. There are great rescues all over the US where you should be able to find an individual that fits your situation no matter what breed you decide on.

Seperation anxiety can be an issue with most breeds.
Over the years, we've had a Lab, Springer Spaniel, and a Beagle, who had issues with barking when left alone.
We currently have two Beagles, who are fine with being alone. Maybe, having more than one is the key.

We have a rescued Yorkie-poo. Small. Sheds little. Great traveler but kinda of high energy... Great with my eight year old twins.
Is very good when left alone. But is a bit overprotective with barking at strangers.
