Different Tire Issue (I think)

I am on my second F250. Can't give details (weights etc)on the first one. This one came with General Grabber HST LT 245/75R 17 LR E. Max wt 3195lb. Other one had General Grabber LR E also.

On the first one, I was cruising down the road and one of the rears went off like a shotgun. Fifth wheel was about the same as the one I have now.

Current vehicle, last winter when buzzing around Charleston SC, The rear got squirrely. TP was 80 psi. Ply separation on left rear, but was able to hobble in and get spare on. On this truck, I have had it on the scales. The rear tires are a tad over 500 lbs to spare before being at max weight recommendation. Tire had 70!% tread left.

I am getting kinda gun shy about hitting the road this winter. Just me.

What do you think?

Other bad experiences with grabbers?

Should i put something else on the rear?

Chalk it off to just my luck?

etc?

Nitto Dura Grappler has some 17" with a load capacity of 3750# at 80psi. I had a set on my 2006 F250 Diesel - sold it with over 62,000 miles on these tires and still had plenty of tread left. Nitto also had other tread patterns available.

Your statement that you are 500 lbs under the tire rating and so under the RGAWR with a 250 Diesel truck and a trailer weighing about 12,500 lbs (pin weight 18.5% =2,300 plus 200 for the hitch=2,500 lbs) is "not likely" (to put it kindly) IMO.

Blowing tires with that much weight added to a 250 Diesel OTOH is not mysterious at all!

To refute that, and prove I am out to lunch, please provide some actual weights and specs for that truck--actual wt on scales, GVWR, 4wd?, and that trailer. Thanks.

I think you should try Dodge or Chevy.. Only kidding.

The "Check the age code" response was a good one so I'll repeat it with credit to the original reply.

Another common cause of swift tire failure is inflation.. When you drop that HEAVY fith weel on you need a bit more support.. Drive the rig across a segmented scale.. Get the inflation chart for those tires and adjust pressure per the chart.

4 yrs. past what even Cooper Recommends.

Per COOPER FAQ (Tire Age)
.........should be removed from service and 'sc rap ped' because it is over 10 years old.

X2 on that - in spades.

I've had outstanding service from Cooper tires on my 1995 GMC 4X4 pickup truck. The first set of Cooper tires on it went at least 12 years and finally the tread wore out. There were no cracks in the sidewalls. The truck sits out in the weather most of the time, too, and of course I have another set of Coopers on it.

For what it's worth regarding our no-safety-compromise motorhome, I'm on our 2nd set of Load Range E Michelin tires - but of couse Michelins can sometimes be hard on the budget.

Got Bridgestone confused with BF Goodrich

Bridgestone....Japanese Company

Michelin.......French Company....which owns Uniroyal and BF Goodrich

OP has 17" rims.
Anyone have specific tire in 17" that has a higher load rating than 3195#??

Thanks, OB. Got my tire companies mixed up. I corrected my original post.

Multiple Michelin explosions. Lost faith in their pickup truck tires. Firestone and General are on my "Banned For Life" list. Utter garbage in my opinion.

17".........don't know of a tire with a higher MAX Load Rating then the 3195#

I have 17"
Run Michelin AT2
Tow heavy.....both rear tires at MAX Load/80#
I get 60,000 plus miles on set.
Never have had an issue with the Michelins.

I had problems with the General tires on my 04 F350. Tread seperation on left front caused $2600 worth of damage. Current truck came with B F Goodrich. Replaced fron at 35000 miles. Rear still on truck with 40500 miles.

boogie, now that I read your post and give it some thought, I probably was predisposed to go in that direction.

Mex gave a brand recommendation. Any others out there? I have never had a Michelin throw in the towel, but :h. Definitely not in the mood to start messing with rim size.

just noticed your post after mine phil, thanx
