Disk Brake Conversion

Just a post to let folks know about my Disk Brakes. I had Performance Braking put this conversion on our 2005 Cougar Fifth Wheel, and a guy named Dennis came to my house and did the install. I'm very happy with the system so far. One thing I will mention, and it's the reason for this post in case someone else runs into the problem.

My tow vehicle is a 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 with a Prodigy P3 controller, and after the install I had intermittent NC errors(not connected) on the controller. This freaked me out a little even though the brakes seemed to be working as they should. After extensive checking on the truck end, I could not find a connection problem. I spoke with Ron the owner of the company, and he knew what the problem was. The brake pump needed a resistor across the blue wire and the ground wire. It fixed the problem. The controller now indicates properly.

The one Ron sent me is a very large rectangular shape and about 1 inch by 1 inch by about 3 inches long. I think it is rated for pretty high current. It has an aluminum body with a hole for mounting to the frame.
This one?

Hydrastar has similar. https://www.hydrastarusa.com/products/accessories/controller-adapter-module/

By the description these are primarily for OEM brake controllers for the same issue.

That's the one.....the first link. It solved the problem with my setup, even though it is indicated for OEM controllers. My 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 with Prodigy P3 controller had the issue so adding the resistor fixed it.

Again I would like to mention that the problem was promptly addressed by Performance Braking, and I created this thread for the few people that might experience the NC issue after installation.

I have the same setup as OP, an 03 Dodge and P3 controller and have experienced the same issue and it was plug connector.

A careful cleaning took care of it.

Love the disk brake setup ! Best thing I did for the camper by far.

At first, I also figured the problem might be in my truck connector or the trailer connector. I had recently changed my connection set up to the EZ Connector product, so I immediately suspected it as the cause. I changed back to the original type cable and connectors, and triple checked the connections under the truck and at the pinbox all the way to the pump. I also have a trailer emulator device which showed the truck end of things to be good.

That's when I tried Ron's suggestion to add a 12v light across the wires I mentioned previously, and then the problem was gone. So he shipped me the resistor(the light would not be a durable enough solution).

So, in conclusion, if you experience the problem, it could be a connection, or it could be the need for the resistor. Ron said that the problem does not happen very often. I was just unlucky.

I agree.....the disk brakes are great.

Performance Trailer Braking is going to put the Disk Brake Conversion on my 2017 Jayco North Point 315RLTS some time in May. Looking forward to it.

Is your P3 set to hydraulic brake type?

Just struck me as odd that you would have this issue.

Yes, my P3 is set to hydraulic, as well as my spare controller which is a P2 also set to hydraulic(actually electric over hydraulic). Both controllers had the same issue.

We eliminated all the usual things that could have caused the issue. The resistor was the answer.

My pump is a Brakerite, and I don't know the value of the resistor.

It's not the type of resistor like we are used to in electronics, you know the little round cylinder with colored bands to denote the resistance value. The one Ron sent me is a very large rectangular shape and about 1 inch by 1 inch by about 3 inches long. I think it is rated for pretty high current. It has an aluminum body with a hole for mounting to the frame.

Ron mentioned that it is only every now and then that this problem comes up. He also said it is more prevalent in late model Fords with the integrated controller. My combination was just the luck of the draw. All my draws have been unlucky lately.

I just thought it might be good to post about this, considering it only happens every now and then. If you have the conversion and don't have the problem then you are good to go. Or should I say "good to stop"....yuk, yuk.

My 2008 Mobile Suites came with the Hydrastar pump and I used a P3 controller with no issues. Randu
