Disposing of old A/C

I replaced my old roof A/C last Sunday. Went off without a hitch.
Now I have the old unit that I am wondering how I get rid of it. Where I live, if you wanr to get rid of an old fridge or freezer, you have to pay to have the freon reclaimed and then they put a special sticker on it.

I'm thinking that if I put it out early on a trash pickup night, the scrappers that ride around would grab it.

Any tips?

Thanks!

Actually, "Freon" is a trademarked term for any of a family of refrigerants. DuPont holds the trademark.

"The most important members of the group have been dichlorodifluoromethane (Freon 12), trichlorofluoromethane (Freon 11), chlorodifluoromethane (Freon 22), dichlorotetrafluoroethane (Freon 114), and trichlorotrifluoroethane (Freon 113)."

I operated Freon 11, Freon 12, Freon 114, and Lithium Bromide plants on submarines for many years. They were referred to as R-11, R12, and R-114 plants... but they could suffer a Freon leak - a potentially serious problem in our confined breathing space.

I am glad to be rid of it. If someone put a few bucks in their pocket, good for them. I had considered taking it to the scrap yard myself. I was afraid of scratching my car up putting it in out out of the trunk or getting a nail in my tire at the scrap yard. Thats real common. Doesn't do much good to get 15 dollars in scrap and ruin a $150.00 tire. I put a hot water tank out once and they were grabbing it before i got back to my garage. I ran out and helped the guy get it in his pickup truck.

Yep, that's what I do too. Especially with old tires. Works every time.

Some cities and counties have recycle centers that will take it (mine does). They'll recover the coolant and recycle that, and recycle the rest as scrap metal. Recovering the coolant is good though.

If the city where you live provides garbage pick up contact them. They can tell you how they want you to do it.

Considering the value of Freon (Of course that's not likely real freon in there (R-12) more likely R-22 or R-134a (R sands for Refrigerant).

But considering the value,,,, They should pay you, not the other way around.

IF that old AC lost its charge due to fatigued/cracked lines, there is no hazardous material to reclame. ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜‰ Thus you do not need to pay a reclaimer.

I just put this out for our trash night around 7pm. It was gone by 720. Had a feeling it would get snapped up fast.

Not too far from you near Youngstown, Oh they have a group called the green team. Several times each year they have a collection drive for tires, appliances, electronics, etc. Just drive it to pickup location and they do the rest. Its a good way to get rid of things in an environmently friendly way. Check your area for similar program. We have enough stuff getting disposed of incorrectly.:B

When ever I want to get rid of ANYTHING, I put an ad on the "free" stuff in Craigslist. I don't care what it is, somebody will want it because it's free. I've often thought about putting an ad on CL that says free dog manure to see how many people would want it.

Lots of the scrap metal dealers also read the Craigslist free section to pick up any scrap metal items such as yours.

You got that right. I saw an ad last fall.."Free leaves, you rake".

Our garbage service won't pick up anything that's not in the can, since they use trucks with 'grabbers' on them. The local dump, however, has a section for appliances.
