Disposing of old absorption refrigerator

Just converted our old gas absorption dometic refrigerator to DC electric compressor and have all the guts from the old system left over. No idea what to do with it. The company that sold the parts for the conversion doesnโ€™t want any of it and I donโ€™t want to simply throw it in the trash for a myriad of reasons. Anyone here have experience dealing with this? I am somewhat apprehensive drilling or cutting into a sealed system full of ammonia and hydrogen gas. Thoughts?

I will be posting later on the conversion process as I am happy with it and very little is out the regarding the benefits and install. Ironically dometic just came out with a similar dc compressor....... timely. ๐Ÿ˜ž

It was still in one piece.... not destroyed but I could not locate anyone who wanted it. Some suppliers wanted the core returned if you purchased their unit. The company I purchased the new dc compressor from did not want it nor did any of the other builders as I did buy their product. Thus, recycling was the only real option.

The cooling unit was no longer functional. Internal fridge temps were around 50ยฐF and we were not trusting anymore. The amount of food disposed of over the previous two years more than paid for the new cooling unit. The capability started degrading after the third year of operation. Multiple times I came to this site and read about fixes that did help improve the operation. Adding cooling fans, improving air flow in the ductwork all helped but ultimately limped it along until it totally failed. It never leaked ammonia but simply lost its effectiveness.

Try reading the OP B4 replying !

????? :h

I didn't read anywhere in the OP that it was destroyed in the removal process.
If it is still functional then someone may have want it.

Like Itinerant suggested, I took the unit to a refrigerator recycling place. No questions or hesitation, they took it for $20 or $30. Out of sight out of mind and safely disposed of.

Side note..... one year in the books for the new dc powered fridge and I am kicking myself for not doing it sooner. Will create a new post on this later.

Thank you all for the replies.

When I changed over to Amish cooling unit I took the old cooling unit to the scrap yard (recycling center), wasn't worried about getting a couple bucks for it just easier to properly dispose of it.

Ask your RV service center what they do with an old cooling unit.

If cooling unit has not leaked it is under 300 PSI plus the solution has not only ammonia and hydrogen gas BUT Soudium Chromate (rust inhibitor) that is toxic.

Call City/County Waste Management or even Local Fire Dept on advice for proper disposal.
Is it time for your medication or mine?
