External Hard Drive for Dish 211z

Installed a External Hard Drive for Dish 211z. When I watch recorded programming the audio skips every few seconds. Tried a new hard drive, same problem. Dish tech thinks it's a problem with the receiver although he says the receiver is up to date. Concerned a new receiver won't solve the problem.
Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas?

While you might "getaway" with SOME self powered external hard drives, it IS NOT RECOMMENDED.

The USB port on the receiver has a very limited USB 5V output capability which is easily exceeded with more modern large size hard drives (1TB and up).

Now days, it is getting more difficult to find external HDs with a separate power supply which does make things a lot more difficult.

Additionally, use a GOOD KNOWN BRAND, not all external hard drives are of the same quality OR DRIVE SPEED. External drive manufacturers often will put slower 5,400 RPM drives in external closures to save money..
