I'm installing a pioneer touch screen double din stereo in a friend's VW bus. It came with a back up camera, which appears to be a generic clone with the same appearance and different names all over Amazon for sub 30$. I do not know if there is any differences betwixt these cameras.
Pioneer MVH-1400NEX 6.2" Digital Multimedia Video Receiver w/Apple CarPlay & CrimeStopper SV51301IR License Plate Style Backup Camera
The backup camera comes with about 23 feet of video cable. It is about the thickness of 16 gauge lamps wire with the insulation. the finsulation is black an quite flexible. Inside the video cable is a sinle red power wire~22 awg for the camera, but the ground wire for powering the camera in not included inside the video cable, that uses RCA connection on both ends the red wire exits the cable near the rca connection on both ends. The power for the camera has a simple barrel plug connector, I could have cut it off and soldered heatshrink the barrell connector delete, but just spritzed some deoxit shield inside, connected it, smared dielectric grease over it then 2 layers of unequal length adhesive lined heat shrink tubing, then split loom to cover it. I ran a separate ground wire to the nearby (-) battery terminal.
The camera draws 0.23 amps even if the stereo is has not triggered the back up screen as there is one wire which needs to be fed 12v to activate the back up screen. Since the VW's reverse switch is Inop and I dont want anything to to with making it operational, I told the owner I will be installing a manual illuminated switch for activating the reverse camera. This will have the benefit of allowing him to view backwards driving down the road without the reverse lights being on.
The camera has rear facing IR LEDS that emit a slight red hue visible to the naked eye in darkness when looking at the camera, and the video screen appears black and white and a bit grainy. When light outside the screen is normal color. I do not know if strong reverse lights will have the camera choose IR or daylight color screens. I forgot to test that on my bench.
I've only bench tested it so far, still in the process getting stereo to fit Dash securely and somewhat stealthily, speaker wires routed and some other internal LED and USB wires routed as well.
I know they have Wifi back up cameras one can use an old smart phone for the display, these are around 70$, and saves the issue of running a wire from camera to display. Not sure of the range or efficacy of these, but I do have access to large screen smartphones no longer hooked to any phone network that I could dedicate to being a back up camera display. I'll see how much I like the VW's reverse camera and then decide if my own Van should have one or not.
It is a pain parallel parking in a tight spot and not being able to discern how close the car is behind me via my side mirrors,( no rear view window mounted mirror to assist) putting it in park having to get out and look rather than risk damaging someone else's veee hickle.
The camera mounts to the Licence plate screws, but can be removed from this holder( which can angle the camera several degrees up or down) via a few screws if one desires to perhaps recess it elsewhere, and make it less obvious/ out of direct sunlight/change its height.
I've no info on other displays one could use with this specific camera or others like it.
Happy shopping and installing. hope this is useful info. I should be able to answer more questions in a day or 4 when I have it up and running and my tunes blasting the neighborhood.
