Question regarding charging and batteries

I have 2 six volt batteries and a power max boondocker 55 amp charger. Trailer, batteries and charger are all 2 years old

Last weekend we were camping and when I woke up Saturday morning I had a clicking coming from my power center. My voltage display was going back and forth from 12.2 - 12.3 in rhythm with the clicking. I switched off the converter and the clicking stopped. I went to Walmart and got a charger to get me through the weekend

Power max sent me a new converter right away. I installed the new one and powered it up. It went right to 14.6 v like it's supposed to. After 12 hours it was still at 14.6 V and I was concerned so I unplugged it. While waiting for another power max converter I put the original WFCO back in and as usual it sits right at 13.6 V. After 3 days plugged in my batteries are at 12.2 or so volts.

Would it really take that long to charge the 6volt golf cart batteries at 13.6 or do I have another problem somewhere? I also checked my water levels and they were only down an 1/8 inch or so

Thanks

Linc

You really need a Hydrometer to check the condition of your batteries. Voltage readings will give you some insight into the condition of the batteries but will not provide a complete picture.

14.7 volts is fine for bulk charging but you should really have a good temperature compensated 3 stage charger.

We're the ones doing the guessing. You're supposed to be measuring things.

Ha ha. They are disconnected. I will see what they say in the morning. 6.6 volts right now. Both are exactly the same but I don't think they have settled down after being on the charger.

Powermax sent you a new one, and dint want the old one back? Was the one they sent you new,....or someone elses return ?
Or if you had to pay for the new one, why didn't you buy a PD ?.......or why dint you buy a PD when you did the change out from the wyfco?
Powermax is known to not be a good converter.
Think about installing an ammeter so you have somewhat of an idea what is going on.

I have the batteries disconnected to see what I get. While I was out there I reinstalled the 2 bad converters just to see what they do with no load.

1 clicks on and off, 2nd gives 14.7 Volts with no battery connected. WFCO is at 13.6 v

I'm guessing the batteries are fine and I just got lucky with 2 bad power max converters

3 days is plenty. Let the 6v rest disconnected 24 hours. Measure and post the voltage of each battery. s/b very close but I think one is weak.

I can get the batteries tested. The camper is stored in a heated building and is plugged in all winter. The power max sits at 13.1 - 13.2 v all winter.

It's sounding like there is something wrong with your batteries, although their age isn't too bad. If 3 converters can't charge them, I'd look there.
