noticed i was leaking fluid underneath the front of the truck onthe drivers side....by weeks end the truck made a straining sound when turning right or left. After taking it to the mechanic...knowing i needed the truck for the weekend he did a quick inspection and stated he believes he corrected what he thought was wrong...

two weeks later same problem? after getting the truck on the lift..states the rack pinion steering is cracked and needs to be replaced? sound correct?

I looked up the labor hours and it's 15-16 hours for a 2010 Tundra.

Wish I used your flat rate manual when I was turning wrenches. Toyota's flat rate for rack replacement is 9.5 hours + toe adjustment.

About 53K. I usually do not bring the truck to toyota. i guess i should. the noice orignally sounded like it was low on fluid. definetly a leak...the fact that it cracked....oy! I love the truck. First issue I have had. We had the 07 with the same engine. Traded it in at about 48K. Were keeping this one.

How many miles do you have on that Tundra? The steering rack has a 5yr/60,000 mile warranty.

Did they say where the crack was? If you need a rack and pinion replacement, it's not going to be cheap. I looked up the labor hours and it's 15-16 hours for a 2010 Tundra. The company I work for charges $70.00 an hour.

The noise/vibration you heard or felt is either a low fluid level or air in the power steering hydraulic system. Good luck.

It is possible, but more likely it is one of the seals in the rack assembly that is leaking. This is something not uncommon on 2010 Tundras. If you are out of warranty, ask your dealer for assistance. Call Toyota's 800 customer relations department phone number if your dealer is not willing to assist. You'll find their number in the owner's manual material.
