V10 water pump job

I needed to do front engine work, pulley's and belts, so I decided to replace the water pump since I was in there. I expected a big ol 12 bolt pump like on the 460, but was very happy to see it's only a 4 bolt unit easily held in one hand. No gasket, just an o ring. Grease the o ring, stick it in, tighten the 4 bolts your done. The hardest part of the job is busting loose that inch and 7/8 fan bolt. I got a loaner wrench that size from Autozone that works good, but holding the pulley from turning required a visit to youtube where there we're several good ideas. Buy a small beam clamp. Clamp it to the pulley, then when it contacts the block it holds firm so you can tap the wrench to undo that bolt. If any of you want to tackle it, it's much better than the old 460 water pumps.

it was on our 1977 rollalong with a 460 had gaskets, not sure about the later ones. the pic is the V10 with the engine mount removed to get to the front 2 ports

Interesting that you had to replace the exhaust manifold gasket. Ford did not use exhaust manifold gaskets on 460 F53 engines.

Engineers are hard at work now to correct the ease of removing the water pump. Future models will be much more difficult.
