Why Do I Need A Check Valve In My Air Actuated Brake Control

I have a Ford air brake truck that I am wanting to pull my fiver with. I bought a Heyes air actuated brake controller to install on the truck. It says to put a check valve in the air line. I have a second air brake truck that I have had for some years that I installed an air brake actuated controller identical to the one I recently bought. I installed that controller about ten years ago and it had no mention if a check valve. It has always worked flawlessly and I have had no problems. Why now does it ask me to install a check valve? What is the function of the check valve unless you blow a line off the brake controller? The truck has a dual air brake system and spring brakes should I have a catastrophic failure.
