09' Expedition Tow Vehicle

Good Evening,

I own a Forrest River Wildwood 261 BHXL Travel Trailer, 27Ft, 4,300 lbs unloaded. I don't have the GVWR but I think if I add another 1,500 lbs for a total of 5,800 lbs I should be close.

I currently tow with an 03' F150 with Tow package and it tows very nicely. Keep in mind I only travel around Michigan so it's mostly flat.

I'm really missing 3rd tow seating, so I'm looking at an 09' Expedition with the tow package (not the extended length model). The tow rating is 8,700 lbs which sounds fine, however, I'm wondering if the reduced length/wheelbase compared to the F150 could effect the ease of towing?

Thanks in advance!
Ben

As mentioned get the tow package and look for the highest payload. Our 03 has over 1550 lbs while our 07 has 1750.

We tow a 25 ft, 4200 lb dry trailer in the Rockies. On the occasion we are running flat and level it's like the trailer isn't there.

Thanks Jerem. I have an Equilizer WDH that I think is rated at 10,000 lbs, so I'm guessing that is fine. The curb weight of the Expedition is 5,500 lbs and the GCWR is 15,000 lbs, so it looks like I'm good...right?

Thanks again,
Ben

Yes...just be mindful of how you set up your equipment...should be a great match.

Thanks!

Make sure you get the heavy duty towing package and pay attention to the weight distribution hitch and you should be good to go. That weight is well in the capabilities of the Expedition...two biggest things are going to be receiver weight rating (900 ish lbs) and the payload of the Expedition. The short wheel base may be noticeable but as part of the compromise you will get better maneuverability at the campground.

Thanks and have fun!
