1 ton truck and AF 990?

I am currently hauling my AF 990 on my 1999 F-250 super cab 7.3 with mods being E rated tires and wheels, Big Wig sway bars front and rear, air bags and Rancho 9000 shocks. It seems like quite a load on the truck. When fully loaded the camper weighs in the neighborhood of 5,000# Also with the camper on the truck I am afraid to tow my 20' boat.
Now to the question. Could I make this work with a SRW 1 ton truck or would I have to go to a DRW truck?
Anyone out there doing this with a 1 ton SRW?
Thinking about getting a used late model or new truck.
Thanks
John

I have a 2016 AF 990 and it scaled at 4880 lbs. with 3/4 of a tank of fresh water. My 2015 GMC dually says to limit slide-in truck campers to 4913 lbs. . You should look for a dually to haul your AF 990.

I haul my camper in my signature with my 2011 SRw. When wet and loaded up I am at about 4k. I also am right at my tire limits. It handled pretty good, acceptable without any mods. I added the lower stable loads quick connect which make this about perfect. I will say though I think I am at the limit of what I would be comfortable with. If there was another thousand pounds for sure I would have to change wheels and tires. This costs several thousand dollars, like 3 or 4k I think. Then maybe some more springs or timbrens or something. My truck has a 4k payload. Its great for what I have. But at 5k I would look for a dually. Keep in mind my 2011 has the fully boxed frame and all the extra beef also. JMHO

My F250 carried a 4000 lb camper and towed an 8000 lb trailer. It can be done safely with modifications, but I was 7000 lbs on the rear axle with the camper and 8000 lbs with the trailer and camper.

Your truck has a weaker frame and smaller brakes in addition to carrying a camper that is 1000 lbs heavier than mine - I would suggest going to a DRW and really look at a chassis cab model for the amount of weight you are carrying and towing.

My current DRW truck is completely stock with no modifications and handles equally or better than my heavily modified SRW. We are looking at 6000 lb TC's now and we'll see if the truck needs anything once I add another ton to the payload.

Just for information my dually with my 990 and the boat weights in at 13,500. That would be a load for a single. That with about 250# of tongue weight from the boat.

Loaded up my Lance 1055 weighs over 4500. On my SRW F350 I added 19.5 wheels 245/70R19 tires, upper stable loads, air bags, front and rear roadmaster anti sway bars, rancho 9000xl shocks. I also towed a 7000 pound horse trailer. It can be done but you are never going to be relaxed driving it. I switched to a 2011 F350 Dually and I will never go back. Loaded up and towing even on bad roads with gusty winds it drives like a dream. now I did add upper and lower stable loads and airbags that I only inflate when towing.

With that much weight, I think you would be happier with the DRW

Back when I was buying my 99 F250 the Ford sales-geek told me he had sold an F250 to someone for their AF camper (I had mentioned AF, since I would be towing a 24-5N). He said the guy popped the hub of the rear-axle going around a corner...

When someone tells you to buy the same rig they own, listen, they might be right. When they tell you to buy a different rig then they own, really pay attention, they probably know something you don't.

John- Here are my thoughts..I have a 990 on order - should be in here in six weeks or so then I can tell you better. There are those that tote a 990 on a single wheel 3500 but most will have some mods like Stable Loads, anti sway bar, possibly air bags. You can see my truck in my signature. I am running a dually and happy to be doing so. My NL is probably 1,000 pounds lighter than the AF and I didn't care how it drove/rode with just an anti sway bar. I experienced a world of difference with lower stable loads. I would prefer to avoid air bags but time will tell. My dually is not my daily driver but I could do it easily enough since I alter ready own it. If I was going the daily driver route- I would go 3500 single wheel and likely look at a lighter weight camper.

If a DRW will work for you, you'd probably be better off. You could make some changes to the current truck including 19.5s, new shocks, stableloads or bump stops, etc, but it would be cheaper to get a DRW.

My boss carries that camper and tows his boat with 14 F350 diesel srw cc long bed. He has Big Wig sway bar and air bags. He says he is going drw soon. Apparently, he is not comfortable with the set up.

With that weight, how are you not over your tire capacity now?
