2015 Summer Journey
Fairbanks, Alaska part 8

We arrived in Tok, Alaska yesterday and driving into Tok was a pleasure, blue skies, scattered clouds and no rain. We did all our laundry, personal things yesterday and weโre looking forward to arriving in Fairbanks.
The TC was really dirty, muddy so a bath it is going to get. Tok RV Park charged us ten dollars for the use of their vehicle wash, no sooner than we pulled out a large motor home rolled right in behind us.
Motoring out of town we took note of some of the businesses that are spread along the long highway.
Today is absolutely beautiful with itโs rich blue sky, hardly a cloud to be found and only a 195 miles to Fairbanks.
Also in Tok Alaska Hwy1 goes west and you pickup Alaska Hwy 2 for Fairbanks, Alaska.
Alaska Hwy 2 is free of trees along the edge and the donโt start encroaching the highway till Moon Lake.
After passing over Cathedrad Rapids 3 did we see a pullout for viewing the Tanana River. We stopped here to view the river and to stretch our legs. Another couple had walked out with us, we took turns taking each other pictures, very nice of them to do so.
The stop here was short and we said good bye to new friends. Back on Alaska 2 there lay before us many bridge crossing such as the one weโre crossing now, Black Veterans Memorial Bridge.
Upon reaching Delta Junction, Julie and I wanting to pick up some โReindeerโ meat. Milepost showed that Delta Meat and Sausage Company is right on the highway and we stopped there.
The pickings were slim, the only thing that they had with reindeer was some sausage and that was only 10% reindeer. The clerk told us it was hard getting reindeer right now so we settled for the sausage; it was hard to tale if there was any reindeer in it with it being 90% something else.
We didnโt stop any place else in Delta Junction on way out, but did see an dome building along the road, log cabin dealer and the turn off for Alaska 4 as we motored on towards Fairbanks.
Our first sighting of the famous Alaskan Pipe Line was a few miles up the highway just before crossing over the Tanana River. This was an engineering feat that has proven itself to be durable over time.
Continuing on toward Fairbanks a small construction project slowed us down temporary, they weโre doing some bridge repairs to the road surface.
One of our planned stops was the Knotty Pine Store and it was coming up rather quickly.
Julie and I spent about a half hour here, looking at some of their items for sale and we did buy a refrigerator magnetic for our collection.
Back on Alaska2, it took us through Elson AFB, another bridge construction and on through the North Pole. We didnโt stop at the North Pole to partake in the activity that was going on, for salmon bake was on my mind.
U.S. Army, Fort Wainwright was upon us in no time and shortly we turned on Airport Way in Fairbanks.
Pioneer Park came into view after a few miles, pulling in I parked our truck in one of the two areas for RVs.
Finding the information center was indeed the first thing to be done and it was easy to find it, right pass the main entrance.
Itโs a good thing we shout out the visitor center for there is a discount coupon for the Salmon Bake. The lady there give us some good information that included for a fee RVs can stay overnight in the parking lot. Mounted on the kiosk wall was information on the current weather and at this time daylight was for 21hrs and 34 minutes.
Tonight feast was still a couple hours or so away till sitting time. Until then we wandered around the park looking at how this place has captured some history of Alaskaโs past.

Time for the chow line came quickly and we walked on toward our feasting place.
Mesquite smoking away in the grilling pit waiting for delicious marinade salmon to be flopped on its hot grill. The three chiefs showing off their culinary skills of cooking the salmon to perfection.
With than endless salad, dessert and non adult drink bar, it was good eating to night.
The grilled salmon comes along with deep fried cod and prime rib (middle of the road grade)
I would with a doubt say this was a fine meal, itโs not often that I eat till my seam burst, but tonight it happen.
After we ate, finding our camper became a problem, here we are looking at the direction pole, but none showed us were our camper. A furry looking gent had a sign that said โexitโ on.
We wander on in a food stupor and somehow we ended up in some kind of fancy mine, it did lead us to the parking area were our camper was at and the night was spent there.
