CA form 4008

Hi guys. We just purchased a new truck listed in sig. The dealer has sent me a DMV form 4008 which is a declaration of gross vehicle weight/combined gross vehicle weight.

Essentially I need to sticker my truck used for non-commercial use in the same way a commercial driver would and pay an additional fee to do so.

Not really thrilled with the idea of stickering my truck.

Is this something new? Just in CA?

Getting ready to find a new state to call home...

There was a reason to be registered 21k at that time as that was what i weighed when going down the road. I had an R endorsement years ago that was for rv doubles. Now have a class A cdl with doubles and triples endorsement so have it all covered if need be.

J endorsement covers rec trailers over 10k and towing triple `doubles`

Dmv in Nv told me that what your towing doesnt need to be included anymore unless your commercial. I used to have my pickup registered for 21,000 lbs

Not included , instead of , plus there would be no reason to go 21k , only up to the limit of 26k minus your truck weight
As far as the cost , each county has different rates , I was reg in Churchill , was more than Lion
I`m going to go with the guy writing the citation , as per whats needed

All pickup trucks in California are registered as commercial, with certain narrow exceptions. In California, any vehicle registered as commercial must stop at all scales again with certain exceptions. One of the exceptions is if the truck is a "pickup truck" as defined by the DMV. To meet that definition it must be less than 8001 lbs unladen weight, and less than 11,501 lbs GVWR. Also, it must have a standard pickup bed, not a flat bed or a utility bed. That means most 1T dually or crew cab pickups manufactured after about 2011 or so are required by law to stop at scales - though almost none do.

It doesn't matter if you are getting paid.

Maybe a concentrated effort of everyone driving such trucks clogging up the scales could get a message across.

So far on our trip now with the new truck we have passed many scales. Still no signs of new plates back home. Hoping they get here before we cross into Cananda. Not sure if they care or not.

Also not understand why I am required to weight the truck now, empty.. What could this possible have to do with the price of tea in China?

Haha,I live in Ontario and moving here from Alberta had to weight my truck also,,the sticker showing all weights on the door apparently means f all..
all pickups are registered as comercial too,,
when I asked why since Im retired and dont work they couldnt answer, yearly fee is only 120 $ thank goodness,
every couple years have to do emmision check 35$

All in all not too bad I sure as heck couldnt live without truck

I did that once accidentally about 20 years ago while towing a trailer behind my truck. They furiously waved me though to the exit.

Nv also did away with needing endorsement for RV doubles.

Dont think that coming to Nv will save you on vehicle registration, my 2016 Ram 2500 registered for 8900 lbs gross is $900. Motorhome was $4200 in Nv and is $1600 in Ca. Yes we are moving the wrong direction but it is what it is.

I live in NV also ,was surprised when talking to a trooper about towing triple with my 5th , he informed me about the reg. stated weight that you have as 8900 lbs , when I registered my truck I was asked is that high enough ? Being from CA and used to the weight ratings , I said yes . The trooper said if you load your truck with anything in the bed , TC , the weight has to include that , in my case , truck is about 8400 - camper is about 4200 , reg has to be paid for at least 12600 lbs and if pulling a trailer or toad that has to be included also.
To make this even more different , when towing a trailer or fifth - gooseneck , the listed weight on the reg is transferred to the towed item , the truck is not included but a triple towed trailer or toad behind a 5th is included , so my truck at 8400 towing my 5th at 14000 lbs with my toad in triple at 2800 lbs needs to be paid for the 14000 lbs and the 2800 lbs = 16800 lbs on the registration , this is good as recreational up to 26000 lbs total including the truck
You do need an endorsement for over towing a trailer over 10k and for triple up to 70 ft total
Good thing is its still cheaper than CA for me , and no dot #`s , and NV could care less about my truck having a flat bed on it

Perhaps but I would have saved over 12k in state income tax in NV for 2016. IN CA we just seem to get the highest rates on ALL taxes. Plus the highest home costs. It has really become a no brainer for our retirement. We need to move our home state to live well or stay here and pinch pennies so we can hand over our retirement savings to the state of california...

That is my understanding. You do not need to put your name on the door and all the other things that go with real commercial operation. The most onerous one left is the legal requirement to stop at scales and the ugly door weight tag.

I have been almost curious enough to pull into a weigh station. I'm guessing they would say get the h*ll out of here, you are a pickup. But not curious enough to accept the ticket for not having the weight tags and whatever else they might come up with, if they decided to break that direction.
