Carrying Butane stove in pop-up truck Camper. 'Hawk' shell.

As we have no cooking stove in our new pop-up, need to know where the best place to carry our small Butane stove would be. Know the propane needs to be in a dedicated vented compartment. We do have a furnace;2 10# propane; but not enough room in the cabinet for butane tanks.

I store my one pound propane bottles on my FWC Hawk on the truck bed with access through the tie down turn buckle doors. Vented and plenty of room for other stuff also: air pump, leveling 2x6 boards, contraband, etc.

Perhaps an option might be a cardboard box from a liquor store. The dividers that protect glass bottles might be just fine for your situation.

Rick ~~ Don't have a picture of that in my mind. My TC ends flush with back of truck. My Hitch Haul would stick out a couple of feet behind my rear bumper. Thanks for the try, ..HHHmmmm.

Another thought:

I have a hitch hauler tray under my TC with a plywood step box built on it. The box is about 8 in wide, 8 in high and 24 in long. I keep outside stuff in it like flashlight, bug spray, dog leash, straps, level, etc.

The step box could hold small propane or butane containers if I did not have side storage compartments or access to the truck bed.

Maddog, I spent this summer completely rebuilding 1979 FWC Grandby. I did away with the propane compartment, stove and heater. Storage is precious in a small camper, so it made sense to me. I also opted for a 1 burner butane. Like you, it will be used for coffee or 1 pot meals. I just store the cylinders inside, in a cardboard box. I believe butane is under very low pressure, unlike propane, and less hazardous.

"If there is a will there is a way".....can you use a piece of abs pipe of appropriate size and cut to length you want with end caps and attach under the side wing?....or strap it on across rear truck bumper?...or hose clamp it vertically onto one of the camper jacks?.....attach it to the camper roof?....

Cobra21 ~ Thanks ~ I really did not have a great concern. Have used them for years no problem. Usually keep cylinders in Propane bay -which is too small with 2 10#'ers in it or on/in outside storage front of PUP which there in no longer any of. Kate

SideHill THANKS ~~~ but intend to use my Butane single burner most of time.COFFEE Do NOT need another Propane multi burner stove ~ Yes can hook them to 10# propane tanks used for furnace. Have several. Just too durned big. If no room for 8oz Butane in 'fuel' bay ~ where would I put 1# propane?? JM2¢

There are a few different things you can do.
Now I have a propane stove in my camper so that isn’t an issue for me however I did want to carry a Propane BBQ/ 1 burner stove combo plus have a quick connect propane attachment on my camper for other propane powered items.
So I searched the internet for the correct size Propane BBQ/ 1 burner stove comb which I finally found. The reason for this model was that I had to have someplace to store it. On my 2017 Northern Lite 8-11 it has a pullout tray in the basement. This Propane BBQ / 1 Bruner stove fits in there perfectly. I bought the duel BBQ/ Stove unit so I can also cook outside if I want.

I have a couple of compartments on my camper that I can easily store the small 1 lbs disposable propane bottles in while traveling.
I also use these 1 lbs disposable propane bottles on my small 1 burner stove for snowmobiling they work great, and is small enough I also bring camping to give myself two burners to cook on outside.

I also added a 10ft propane hose in my propane cabinet where I have two 20 lbs tanks stored. There is a small brass breaker that I added the hose which has a 1/4 brass quick connect with safety valve. If I want to hook up any other propane powered appliance I can just pull the hose out of the compartment and hook it up.

I have had a butane stove for over 10 years that lives in my sailboat. The stove is fantastic with the self lighter. My butane cans live down below in the cabin, where I have never had any leakage problem. I trailer my boat so it is banged around. They stay out there in -30 degrees to 100 degrees. No problem, great stove, just take the cylinders out of the stove when not in use.

You'd have to do some search for specific laws, but the idea is that small cylinders, I think up to 1 lb can be transported and used with minimal safety regulations.
When you have bigger cylinder, who can be lethal when something goes wrong- they require separate and vented compartment.
I noticed lately that lot of restaurant no longer use gas hook-ups, but they use portable stoves with those cup-sized cylinders.
My guess is that there have been too many restaurants fires and small cylinders make more sense safety-wise , even with extra cost.
Our son took us to Korean restaurant where food was cooked on our table. I sure would not like to have big propane cylinder on my table.

Can you put them in the truck bed through the access doors near the floor?

Make a padded bag or sleeve to keep them in.
