Does the warranty expire as of the trucks build date in the third year or by the start of the year?

Yep. In service date which is usually the purchase date. My Excursion sat for 6 months on the lot before the first owner bought it.

When I was with Chrysler, the dealer I worked at had a left over 03 Durango, a loaded up SLT+. At that time the 04’s with the HEMI came out, so everyone had to have the 04. Well that 03 sat for 2 years on the lot before an older couple bought it at a deep discount. And the in service date was sometime in 05. It sold with its full warranty.

Add to this if you bought this truck used and it was 1 year old, sat on lot for few months before you bought it, warranty clock doesn't stop ticking while it's on the lot.

Actually it is the in service date and the mileage at that time, not the date you purchase it. The two can sometimes be different.
