Contemplating the 2017 Platinum F350

I've got an opportunity to sell my 2016 Platinum for what I believe to be a very good price, especially reletive to what I paid for it. Then I look at what they want to go to a new one and I think I might just keep what I have. How much more would you be willing to pay for a new '17 Platinum vs a '16 Platinum with 30k miles?

The way I'm looking at it is like this:

If I keep my current truck it will likely only be for 4 more years. At that time it will likely cost me about 45k to upgrade. If I upgrade now for 16k and again in 4 years for 32k I will have put out $48000 total over the next 4 years....not a big difference one way vs the other. Likely if I do it now I won't do it again for more like 6 years so it could end up being very close to a wash one way vs the other.

So in July 2014 I totaled my 2004 2500 Laramie CTD Dodge. Agree that it is an insurance payoff, not a trade-in but I got $24K for a 10 year old 3/4 ton. I negotiated for a 1 ton dually with Aisin transmission Laramie. Long bed crew cab. $65k down to $52k after rebates. $52-24=$28k loss in 10 years. $2.8K per year. Nowhere near $15k per year loss!

I'm suggesting it might cost me 48000 over 6 years trading twice......$8000 per year. So following an expensive program like mine for the next 25 years would cost me $200,000. The other extreme would be to be as fortunate as you and every 10 years pay 28k. So 70,000 over the next 25 years. For an older guy like me it's not really a big deal one way vs the other. For a 25 year old it might be a real big deal.

I went from an 11 to a 16, braking was a huge improvement on the 16. as for speed and hp improvement I cant tell as my 11 was a srw with 3:55 gears and 16 is a drw with 4:30.

I haven't driven or even looked at a 17 model in person, don't want to put ideas in my head as I plan to keep the 16 for a while....which could be 1-6 years if you ask my wife.

I have my 2016 shined up and parked in my garage and every time I walk by it I wonder if I've got rocks in my head. I certainly would have been happy without upgrading but the '17 is a very refined truck.

It will be interesting to hear how it pulls compared to your '15 and your '11.

There wasn't a huge difference between the 11 and 16. The torque converter of the 11 seemed to hook up a little faster than the 16 but the exhaust brake on the 16 was far better than that of the 11. They were both excellent trucks. After one short pull with the 17 I notice quite an improvement. The transmission still wants to hang on to the upper gears longer than it should. But for the most part the downshifting and exhaust brake are very smooth. There is one place in our road where the pavement has some humps and dips in it. This Citation trailer pulls very nice for the most part but in this one particular spot it would throw the old truck around a bit. I didn't feel that at all with the new truck.

you mention that a power difference is noticeable from the 2016, do they have the same gears or is just the increase in torque?

Both are 3.55 gears with the same size tires. The low rpm power was only increased 7% but it just seems to have a little more get up and go....maybe the turbo spools up a little quicker, maybe the throttle sensitivity is just a little touchier or maybe its all in my head.:h

I assume you will be getting the PUCK style B&W to compliment that fancy new truck!

Congrats!!!

I haven't tried dropping it in yet but I've been assured that my hitch from the 2016 is the same.

I forgot that year did have pucks so it should fit no problemo!

A 21,000 lb 5er with a pin @15% is 3150 lbs. That leaves 150 lbs for the driver. 15% is the typical MFG minimum. Looks like Ford took the numbers down to the gnats arse.

I see the grawr is a little higher on the new truck (7230 lbs) but the truck must have gained a few pounds....I think the cargo carrying capacity is about 150 lbs less. They rate it for pulling a 21000 lb 5ver and give it a 3300 lb cargo carrying capacity???? A couple occupants and a good hitch might weigh in around 500 lbs so I guess a 2800 lb pin is all its really rated for...so 14000 lbs is a little more honest. Personally I will have no problem loading it to its gross rear axle weight rating. I'll find out tonight what the curb weight of the rear axle is.
