Last but certainly not least is the Cummins history lesson series. After completing the Duramax(LINK) and Powerstroke(LINK) history lessons, we finally get to the first direct injected turbo diesel in a pickup, the Cummins 12V 5.9L.

I never said it wasn't new tech, I just said it was the first in the HD pickups.

Not exactly new technology it was introduced in European cars much earlier. Cummins have not made an impression in Pickups outside NA

The first passenger car to be powered by direct injection was the 1986 Fiat Croma 2.0 TD i.d. , The Turbo Diesel iniezione diretta pump was developed by Bosch in accordance with Fiat's engine requirements

We had a large combine on our family farm when I was a kid that had the same International/Navistar diesel in it that was in the F-series pickups around that time. Probably early to mid 1990s time frame, although the combine may have dated back a few years earlier.

I got to drive a Dodge truck with the cummins to put on display at a county fair in 1988.

Wow, 20 years since they started sticking them in Dodge/Ram trucks. And it started life as an engine option Cummins offered for agricultural equipment.....
