Ford F 250 6.2 Gas

Does anyone have experience with the Ford F 250 6.2 gas engine. I am interested in buying a 2011 with fairly low mileage to tow my 12000 Lb fifth wheel.Never have had a Ford pick up always GM so any help as to reliability,fuel mileage, etc would be appreciated.

I have to agree with your assessment. We have the 2015 crew cab 4x4 6.2l with 3.73. I pull around 8,000 loaded 30 foot TT. There are some hills that Ill hit the bottom at 65+/- and top at 50+/-. The gas just doesn't have the torque. I would get this truck for 12,000lb. We do want a fiver and they make lighter ones, also I realized that with the 30 foot TT that's its the limit I want in length. If we decide to go bigger then Ill get the diesel.

I think you've made a good choice and will be much happier with a diesel!

Thanks for the info everyone it has helped me decide to take a pass on this truck. Even though it it in great shape with low mileage and has plenty of bells and whistles I guess I need to start looking at diesels for the kind of weight I am pulling.

We have several Ford 6.2L trucks at the city I work at and they have been bulletproof workhorses. I would agree with the others that 12k lbs is likely about the max I would tow with it comfortably.

But it's a gasser and the other 2 you compared are diesels, so agree on the reliability part, but the other 2 will pull the doors off a 6.2......if you warm them up a bit.

To the OP, agree with others, good relaible combo, great transmission too.
Having had 2 as work trucks, I would not want to tow that large of a trailer, long term, with it. It will do it, it will not break, it will not pull head winds, mountains or altitude very well IMO.
I'm comparing to the plethora of diesels out now though. It will do about as good as any other big gas rig.

Very strong and reliable power train but 12,000lbs with the 3:73 gears it will struggle against a strong headwind, in which case keep it at or under 60mph, or the gas gauge will move faster than the truck. I would not pull anything over 10,000lbs without the 4:30's

The 6.2 is a solid trouble free engine. The 6-speed transmission is great, and gears can be locked out, as needed, to avoid constant up/down shifting. Most 250s came with 3.73 gears, and about 12K towing, GCWR about 19K. If the truck has optional larger 18" wheels/taller tires, your actual gearing could be closer to 3.55.

With any gas engine, towing near wt limit, it is the gears that make the difference. That truck will work, but would work best, if it had the 4.30 gears, for the 12K loaded weight FW.

I have a 2013 I use for my landscape business. Around 75,000 miles right now. Every single day, that truck is ready to go to work and it does everything I ask of it.

When we had a Work & Play TT, I used it for about six months. Mostly 400-500 mile round-trips. My truck had the 3.73. Once you get up to highway speeds, it does pretty well. Inclines would mean as much as dropping from 6th to 3rd sometimes. Revving is just a part of life when towing with this motor but it doesn't mind it.

If you're insistent on getting a gasser, its a great engine. But as others have said, that's a lot of weight for most any gas engine. Check that axle ratio and hopefully, its a 4.30. A 3.73 would be really tough and a 3.55 would be a deal breaker in my opinion.

My 2010 5.4L F250 has been rock solid for the 95k miles I've owned it. Drop the 6.2L in and it would be even better. It's the first truck I've owned in a long time that I haven't been anxious to trade for something better.

X2 on the above. Is the 12,000 a dry weight? Even if it is not you are at the max tow capacity of the rig, especially if it's a crew cab. Even with a 4.30 the door sticker has to have a GCWR of 22,500, not 22,000 to be rated for 15K.

That is more weight than I would want to tow with a 6.2 for long distances (I have a 2017 6.2). But it will get the job done and they are very reliable. If you can find on with the 4.30s, it will tow better according to the internet.

Gas mileage will not be stellar.
