I am considering a Rockwood fifth wheel with a dry weight of 6592, a dry hitch weight of 1181, and a cargo capacity of 1458. The GVWR of the pickup is 8800. The f250 has 3.73 gears. This truck will probably pull the fifth wheel ok but will it struggle in hills/mountains? Any insight is welcome!

As I looked at your numbers, I couldn't help but notice you're very close to what I'm pulling, even though mines a TT (which should make me even worse?). I'm not putting out the torque numbers you are and I do fine. No, you won't be winning the towing races, but you'll get it done. I would think payload should be in the 2600 lb range for your 250.

My concern was. the rear end ratio as well. I did not want to get into a situation where the truck was such a dog that I would be forced into a different tow vehicle. It has been a strong runner and a solid performer so far. Thanks everyone.

I would agree with those here that said you'll be ok. We used to have a '99 F250 V10 but we had the 4.3 gear ratio and we towed everything from a 25' TT, 29' TT, 32' TT, and it did fine, with plenty of power to tow these, and that's with the 32" TT being close to 10K. When we upgraded to a 35' fifth wheel with a GVWR of 14K, although we never towed to full capacity, the truck struggled, really struggled. Our mpg was 7 - 9. Since then we have upgraded to an F350 DRW Diesel and all is well again.

I towed my TT through the hills of TN with no problem but I did have 4.30 gears. Can't see why yours will have any problems much less struggle as long as you don't mind hearing the engine rev. The V10 has to spin to make power.

2001 pickup. The fifth wheel is 2014. I do not know the payload of the truck. It is just an extended cab pickup. The model of the rockwood is the 8244 lite series. I bought the truck new. The length of the camper is 26 feet 9 inches.

With an 8800 GVWR that would be a pre 2005 model. It will have the 2v version making 310 HP and 420 ft lbs torque and If all the maintenance has been kept up it should do just fine. The 3.73 is not the greatest towing gear but should be adequate and payload will be in the 2500 lb range so no problems there

I'm not sure you can describe it as "struggle". You won't be the fastest one up the mountain, and you'll have to let it rev pretty high, but you should do ok. That seems pretty well matched, imo. Expect mileage in the 6's though.
