Front rack

For folks that are carrying a front rack on their trucks, do you get a lot of bounce on them when driving down the road not the truck just the rack? How about when you are on gravel roads that are rough? About how much weight are you carrying on the racks?

I have a Bodiak front mounted hitch (rated for 5000# trailer weight and 500# tongue weight) and want to carry a rack on it with my Honda 2000 and about 7.5 gallons of fuel. This would be in a aluminum tool box with very few other odds and ends. I put it all on there and seems fine but I can bounce it up and down some. Of course I'm just a little guy (not) and am putting quit of bit of weight down on it when bouncing it.

Those things can't be hard for a welder to make to your specifications...couple pieces of angle iron on the right size bar, and some black spray paint. They could even size it to whatever box you bring them. I'm thinking about making one for my Wrangler...would even be great for extra space while I'm towing it.

Sorry I didnt mention this problem earlier. I could of saved you a trip (or two). I had looked at those box mounts at TSC and I knew there was a reason why I did not buy one, but for the life of me I could not remember why....call it old age or whatever. After I read your reason why it didn't work for you then I remembered why it didnt work for me. I even considered trying to make an extension but than gave up on thas idea and went with the aluminum cargo carrier.

Hey, no probably it is only 3 miles to TSC and I had to go out and look for an anti rattle lockable pin for my rear hitch. I could not find one in town so it was back home and order one from etrailer. I wish I had thought of this when I ordered my hitch from them it would have saved me $5 on shipping charges.

Just thought I would let people know if you plan on getting the TSC platform for a mounting a toolbox on the front that I bought one the other day and took it back today. I received my Curt hitch and installed it this morning. Then I put the TSC platform on it and guess what, the stinger part is not long enough. When I it put into the location to put the pin in the back brace that you mount the toolbox on is 3.5" recessed behind my front bumper. No way to mount the toolbox on it. Also the ad on the TSC says that it is 20" X 36" is wrong. It is actually 25" wide x 26" long including the stringer portion with 20" between the mounting rails, way smaller than I thought it was going to be. With my tool box mounted on it I would have had over 15" hanging off each side. To much non supported area for me. If it had been the 36" then I would only have had 10" on each side that I could live with.

So again it is a buyer beware, TSC did not question the return it just another trip that I made for nothing.

So I'm back to my Curt rack for my toolbox, at least now that toolbox does not bounce up and down like before and that makes me happy.

DWeikert,

Roger, I went to Tractor Supply's website and noticed the same 16" height. Northern Tool has aluminum boxes that are a bit taller (18") that shoould accomodate the Honda generators. That Dee Zee hitch mount looks nice and I think would work with any aluminum box.

I picked up the box at Tractor Supply. Its 19" deep X 48" long.
Bought the aluminum carrier from DiscountRamps.com (Item#HCCA-2249) Make is RAGE.
From the bottom of the carrier to the top of the box is about 19".
I wanted all aluminum due to future rusting issues. Since the pic was taken I removed the 2 red lenses and replaced with amber. You can also get them at TSC or off ebay.

Careful, I've been shopping for a box and was looking at Tractor Supply, but their 48" and 36" boxes list a height of 16". Note kerry4951 said "From the bottom of the carrier to the top of the box is about 19"."

Man now you show me this, This would really work nice for me and just mount my toolbox on it. You guys are costing me a lot of money and changing things. :B

My tool box is a Better Built and is 20" height, 20" depth and 56" long so it would hang over that rack by 10" on each side which I don't thing would cause any problem. If I need to run some metal out futher that would be no problem.

I'm still waiting for my Curt front hitch from etrailer. This is the slowest they have every been on getting me something. Ordered it on Wednesday and they stated on Wednesday that it would be shipped in 24 to 48 hours. Never shipped till the 28th Sunday?. Now I have a tracking number form UPS but they are not showing any shipping info yet. It is coming from Wentzville, MO to Bentonville, AR all of 322 miles. I could have driven up there and picked it up faster than it is coming. Now they are saying delivery this Thursday. We'll see as I still do not believe that UPS even has it yet as there is no info on their site other than a shipping label has been created but nothing else about getting it from the supplier.

I just measured the inside height of the TSC box that I have. It is 16" inside height.

Thanks for verifying. After reading your post I went back to the TSC web site in case I missed something, but 16" was all I saw for height. I was kind of hoping they might have something in the store not listed online. Guess not.

Thanks again.

I would have loved to get an aluminum rack but all of them that I looked at on etrailer was to short for my toolbox which I already had so I had to go with a steel one. My box is 56" wide so my rack is 60" but I really like how your carrier looks.
