Any one familiar with a route I can safely & legally take with a 20ft travel trailer hooked up to my truck?

One last comment when you get over the Throgs and into the Bronx, as you approach the GWB the road splits, lower level to the right, upper level to the left. At one point they were making all trucks take the lower level, if that's the case then be advised to stay to the right as you approach that split. When the traffic is tight on the Cross Bronx it's almost impossible to change lanes pulling a TT, folks just don't let you in. We left NY in 2011, gcloss can confirm if GWB is still lower level only for trucks.

Storing TT off of LI is an interesting idea, if you never camp on LI...we used to enjoy the short weekend trips to the beach or to the Suffolk County parks. Indian Island was a favorite.

Another option if you are headed up to New England (I know OP is going to PA, this is FYI for other LIers) is to take the Orient Point Ferry to New London. We did that once or twice with the 32' TT in my sig pic....not cheap, but what a relaxing way to go.

I believe the propane carried on the trailer makes upper level mandatory.

Propane is only allowed on upper roadway of GWB and Verrazano

I would prefer the Throgs Neck to the Whitestone, the lanes are wider. Plus if you are coming from the east, the Clearview gets you off the Expressway sooner than the Van Wyck.

If you go that way (either the Throgs or the Whitestone) then take 80 to 287 and drop down to 78 that way.

I agree the Throgs Neck is much better than the Whitestone.

To avoid the constant nightmare of going through NYC to get off Long Island, I now store my trailer upstate NY from Memorial Day weekend to Columbus Day. One trip off Long Island and one trip back per year. I've got enough gray hair and don't need anymore.

Thanks soo much! It is such a problem to drive anywhere because of restrictions! I was thinking of taking the van wyck to Whitestone to gwb, no good? No restriction in PA, right?

Sure you can take Van Wyck to Whitestone to GWB if that is easier
Remember there is construction on the Cross Bronx that slows everything down at times

Well from Long Island the only way out of long island is the LIE to Throgs Neck via Clearview expressway (but not VIA cross Island Parkway) to the GWB. You cannot take the Northern or Southern State Parkway. You cannot take the tunnels either. Then it looks like 80 to 287s. To I78 to US 222.

I've done this route many times over the last 30+ years of towing a RV. All I can say to the OP is drive slow, watch for those potholes and Good Luck!!!

Not true....you can take the LIE (495W) to 278W (the BQE) to the Verrazano bridge across Staten Island to the Outerbridge Crossing then 95 north 1 exit to I-78 then west to PA. Used to go that way all the time to PA.

Or you go 95 south to I-76 then west, what ever is easier to Stevens.

No matter which way you go, go slow and watch the potholes or your dishes will be all over the camper when you get there...
