I have a 77 coachmen travel trailer with a suburban furnace. I can not get the pilot to light. The blower works and i have propane to the furnace. I checked the on/off valve going into it and it is clear also. Any ideas what the problem is?
Thanks in advance!

I cannot get main burner to light. Can the gas valve be plugged? Is it possible to clean it

Use the black knob.

And also I'm not seeing a knob to go to the pilot/on position. It just has like two buttons to push. Ones plain white that runs the ignitor and the other is black and says reset on it

I believe it's an nt22 c. And I will try with a torch as soon as I can because ik gas is getting to the furnance. That was the first thing I checked. Then I pulled it apart to see if something was blocking the gas from the main burner. Which I did find the slots on the burner rusted shut so I cleaned that and got that all cleaned up. I will report back once I check with a torch and let you know what I find. Thanks again!

When trying to light main flame..........you do have thermostat turned UP so it is calling for heat?

A Model number would really help
Is it time for your medication or mine?

If running off of battery, it could be low. It will not start if the battery is not charged.

Or plug it in to electric. Mine is a 79 with the same furnace. It has to have enough juice.

Do you have a 1lb. propane torch?

Heres my drill for standing pilot appliances: Turn off gas valve for the required 5 minutes. Turn knob on gas valve to "pilot" position. Ignite pilot flame with torch while directing torch flame onto thermocouple (it usually changes color) and turn gas valve to "on" position with thermostat set for high temperature. The main burner should ignite because the thermocouple has been heated. If main burner does not ignite, the orifice and burner tube may be dirty/clogged. If the main burner does ignite but the pilot does not remain lit, the thermocouple may be bad or pilot flame not adjusted/directed onto thermocouple, or pilot orifice or tube plugged/bent. If all the above remedies don't work, time for a new gas valve and inspection/adjustment of the main gas pipe and regulator.

Good luck with the furnace.

Change gas valve if you are sure you are getting gas to furnace. You can check by loosening the fitting at the furnace and see if you hear or smell gas.

I tried earlier with no success but maybe I didn't hold the lighter on the thermocouple long enough? I will try again tomorrow and see if I figure anything out and I will post back.

Well the way it sounds it's the gas valve. Can I even get parts for this anymore? Will any other parts switch out if not? Again thanks for everyone's help. You have helped me a ton!

First see if you can get the main burner going.
Report back if you do or do not. I am guessing that once the main burner is on for a few minutes anything that might be blocking the pilot light tube.

You should be able to get a replacement but you will need the model and serial number.

Get the main burner on if it will light

The pilot is such a low pressure small flame just blowing at it with you lips will often clean it off good enough to solve the problem. We have also had good luck on the farm by banging on it (Gently) with a pair of pliers.

Thank you that explains a lot. Any idea how long I will have to hold the lighter on it to get the gas to come on?
